Track of The Day: Luca Doobie & Ricky Leo – Three Sharp Knocks
Luca Doobie & Ricky Leo – Three Sharp Knocks
Luca Doobie & Ricky Leo team up on 'Three Sharp Knocks', a dark and deep, tech house track featuring stripped down vocal samples from the horror film Babadook. The song is composed of a beautiful array of analog percussion stabs and long stretched out chords that intertwine with pulsating bass lines that have a wonderful vibration on the tail end of each note. Repetitive vocal pads are cleverly placed together with a chord pattern that mimics the words 'ba-ba ba dook dook dook', which creates the central synth rhythm of the song. A phased tom, soft hi-hat and panning shakers introduce the opening bars of the song to supplement a meaty kick that drives the track forward. A soft, high-pitched sine wav rises in prominence as the track accumulates layer after layer of ambience and percussive complexity. Here's what our Guest Jeff Devoe had to say about the track:"The vocal sample in the tune gives it it’s name sake and is so subdued and calm that it’s effect on how you perceive the tune after you hear it is surprising. Listen to this track and try to imagine it without the vocal sample. It just wouldn’t be right."Not for the feint of heart but you can indulge in the film's trailer below:Ricky Leo is a Milan born DJ and producer that has been ingrained in the Italian underground house scene for past decade. The natural progression from live music performances as a drummer and bass player to electronic music became apparent as Leo began releasing music in 2012 with small independent labels like Apulia, Baci Recordings, Sick Society. Through his time working at prominent night clubs such as Tecnicolor, Circle Club, G-Lounge, DeSade, Fluid, Amnesia Leo continued to develop relationships that would inevitably lead him to his first major label signing, Get Physical. His current momentum will hopefully continue throughout the year and we look forward to seeing more from him soon.Luca Doobie shares the same stomping grounds with Ricky Leo and has been at it for even longer. The Spades label boss has spent over 15 years refining his craft, building his own label and forging relationships with other producers. Names like Andre Crom and Milly De Mori come up in conversations and interviews reflecting on his early beginnings. A trained sound engineer, musician and lover of all things Punk, there is little that Doobie seems to miss out on. As is evident in today's track Luca is passionate about films and their accompanying soundtracks, citing David Lynch, Abel Ferrara, Martin Scorsese, Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Jim Jarmousch as some of his favorite directors.
