Track of the Day: Illyus & Barrientos - Strings

LAMP-totd-illyus-barrientosThe weekend is upon us and we've got a superb lineup for our Fortune 421 takeover this Sunday featuring Klatch, Birdee, Lee Wells, Sleepy Cat, PZB and myself. In the spirit of the event, summer, pool parties and what not I decided to pick up on a tune from the fast rising production duo known as Illyus & Barrientos and their new single 'Strings' out via Glasgow Underground. The track's premiere on Annie Mac back in May along with her statement 'Illyus & Barrientos are killing it at the moment...' preface this review perfectly.

Illyus & Barrientos - Strings

This latest release from the duo channels the disco gods in every sense of the idea. The opening bars light up the floor with smooth congas, soft kicks, panning maracas, softly delayed claps with a bit of attack thrown on them . Of course my favorite layer to this cacophony of beats is the quintissential disco lazer popping around in the upper frequencies. As the track's title befittingly infers, strings galore fill the arrangement with pure auditory joy rising up with their chord progression as a funky bass bounces along to the hip shaking rhythm and groove that drive the track forward. A soulful female vox echoes in during the breakdown, and is cleverly looped and doubled to give the accompanying piano track some extra character. 'Strings' intertwines the classic elements of disco with a sultry composition of latin percussion layers supplemented with a modern up-tempo arrangement that will keep that parquet floor full all night long.Check out the full collection of remixes featuring CamelPhat, Golden Boy, Dantiez, and Kevin McKacy.Illyus & Barrientos are described as an unlikely duo, especially within their native Glasweigan underground scene. Luckily for them and the golden ear of Kevin McKay their paths would inevitably cross and a phenomenal studio partnership would form. In just a short span of time the duo have amassed an impressive disocgraphy with some the industry's biggest names; Suara, Toolroom, Exploited Records and Glasgow Underground. Their latest drop on Toolroom 'Love You So Much' featuring some beautiful vocals from Trina Broussard has already been dubbed as the Ibiza Anthem of the year, and we're not even a third of the way through the season! As far as genres are concerned they don't seem to apply or matter to I&B which makes their music even more approachable as the pan the spectrum of techno to house to straight disco as is apparent in today's track. This single out via Glasgow Underground boasts a plethora of remixes from some our favorite producers further cementing the duo's status among the underground pioneers. We're massive fans of GU and what Kevin McKay is accomplishing at the moment. His tenacity and undeniable ear for quality, thought leading music has earned the label a permanent place in my rekordbox and likely that of thousands of DJs the world over. If it behooves you and you have yet to explore this imprint, I highly recommend it; each track is worth every penny.
