LAMP Weekly Mix #97 feat. MAIKOL

Continuing our Socal vibes this week with a stimulating Guest Mix from LA based DJ Maikol. He's stacked it full of disco beats, seductive vocals, and funky house beats creating a 1 hour and change of rug-cutting, foot shuffling joy. Check out his interview with MR PUZL below:MR PUZL: This is obviously not the first time we've met, but for our fans who may not know you tell us a little bit about Maikol and how the project has come into being over time.Maikol: After getting into electronic music through Justice and Digitalism in 2007 I started making mixes of my own on virtual DJ. The software/hardware used has changed over the years, but the amount of enjoyment I get out of mixing hasn't! I have to give a Cuban bakery credit for my DJ name. A couple summers ago while I was interning at the Bootleg, I discovered Gigi's, which has become one of my favorite places to eat in LA. They were notorious for always mispelling my name on the receipt and one time they somehow came up with Maikol.MP: So we noticed you slid in an unreleased track from our guests last week, Sunset Groove. How do you go about curating your tracklists when you're preparing a mix like this versus one say, for an event?Maikol: Music scenes are very communal and thanks to social media you find out everyone seems to have at least twenty mutual friends in common. Especially in LA's music scene, quite rapidly you become friends with more and more like-minded people who have a mutual respect for good vibes and good music. It's natural to want to share what you've made with each other and get it out at the homie level at first. In the case of that killer Sunset Groove edit of Timmy Thomas that Hotline Bling samples, Micah happened to master it and show it to me a day before I recorded the mix, so I just had to include it. He and Michael are amazing producers/DJs, who have a lot of great stuff brewing. Whether it be for a mix or an event, I always hit up everyone I know to see if anyone has anything new/unreleased that can be played out, and someone's always got something!MP: Growing up in Southern California you've been privy to a host of different styles and genres of music. What bands and artists have you drawn inspiration from? How did those influences drive you towards DJing and producing events?Maikol: My favorite has always been and always will be Led Zeppelin, with Nine Inch Nails and Queens of the Stone Age close behind. In high school I would always make CDs for friends full of indie bands, electronic artists, and such because I loved staying up to date with what was new and sharing what I discovered with others. I still do and DJing is simply an extension of that! I think having an appreciation of various music genres helps a lot with DJing and creating lineups for events because you have to be so versatile if you expect to even slightly keep up.MP: L'Affaire Musicale has been a very welcomed addition to club events in LA over the past few years.Tell us a little bit more about your role and how you see the company evolving?Maikol: I assist in the curating of our lineups and mix series. I'm always scouting for new up-and-comers from around the world and reaching out to booking agents to see when artists are available. It's been wonderful to be recognized and appreciated for my knowledge of and passion for music because it's not easy to prove that to someone in an interview or on a resume. And we've got big things in store for 2016, which I cannot wait (but have to) for us to announce ;)MP: From the perspective of someone who gets to be involved with LA's club scene first hand. How do you see it's landscape evolving? What trends are you noticing that are setting the stage for the next wave of performers and event producers?Maikol: Everyone is trying to bring a more live aspect to their show now and I am all about it. Obviously some do a better job than others at translating to the concert venue setting, but the creative effort put into it, for the most part, can't be frowned upon.MP: You've had a busy year, performing at a number of events and venues. It's hard to pick favorites but were there any that really stood out in your mind?Maikol: Opening for Dimitri from Paris at Sound Nightclub was certainly one for the books. As well as playing on the main stage of the Regent Theatre for our live Moullinex/Ben Browning show!MP: Between your work at L'Affaire, DJing and a full-time job, how do you balance everything!?Maikol: Honestly I don't know. It never quite feels balanced, but somehow it works out!MP: As the year wraps up what have you got in store for 2016? Will we start to hear some original productions coming from your Maikol project?Maikol: Next year I want to double the amount of shows I played in 2015. And only time will tell...MP: Now let's get down to some serious shit. Favorite Star Wars character? Favorite book or series?Maikol: This is so difficult, but I've always been partial to Boba Fett. I wish I had the time to read more of the expanded universe, but it's just so damn expansive! I will go with the Thrawn trilogy because it is actually phenomenal Star Wars storytelling and it's all still canon in my heart <3MP: If you had to make a playlist for a "road" trip on the Millennium Falcon what would you open with?Maikol: Coldplay - Talk (Thin Whike Duke Mix): https://youtu.be/fAgnE0vMD1kMP: Will Luke be the Sith Lord in 'The Force Awakens'?Maikol: I would be so down to see the journey and the struggle of getting Luke back to the light side.
