LAMP Weekly Mix #91 feat. GRYN

Welcome back to another installment of our Weekly Mix series! We're excited to have GRYN in the house with a fresh collection of hand picked tracks to satiate your ears. This young production duo has been making waves since they burst onto the scene through Insomniac's Discovery Project. With a range of musical skill sets at their disposal GRYN are poised to bring a fresh take on the electronic scene that will permeate across multiple genres and resonate with a wide audience. Check out their interview with MR PUZL below as he gets serious about tequila and shaving products.MR PUZL: Tell us a little bit about your mix and the tracks you chose.GRYN: Since the summer’s come to an end, we decided to put together a collection of tunes that we’ve really been digging over the past few months. The selection of tracks reflects our current musical influences, ranging from funk to nu disco, all the while keeping it thumping.MP: How did you guys first join forces? Had you both been producing independently beforehand?GRYN: We actually both studied undergrad at Chapman University in Orange County. There’s a large and enthusiastic electronic music following at Chapman, with a lot of students producing music in their spare time. We’ve both studied and played music most of our lives, and Ethan began producing on Pro Tools and Logic when he was 14 years old. Sophomore year of college, we started producing in Ableton on the weekends, and it wasn’t until Senior year that we started the GRYN project.MP: Did you guys grow playing instruments? If so what elements have trickled over into your productions?GRYN: Yeah, music was a huge part of both of our upbringings. Alex has been a percussionist for most of his life, performing in a variety of jazz and wind ensembles. Ethan grew up learning several instruments, including guitar, bass, piano, percussion, and even singing.MP: Your track 'The Need' really took you guys onto another level when Insomniac selected you as the winner for their Discovery Project. Did this recognition and the experience of playing on such a big stage influence your future productions? Aside from the networking and newly formed relationships, what are some more personal reflections you have from that opportunity?GRYN: Receiving that amount of recognition was really humbling, and it made us really excited for what’s to come. Playing on a stage that massive, and meeting artists that we seriously respect, definitely gave us even more drive to keep working hard. Since Beyond Wonderland, our production has gotten a lot more expansive. We’ve been experimenting more with our percussion and featuring a variety of vocalists, really trying to break the formula that you see happening more and more often in the industry.MP: Your original works have traversed many genres, displaying your willingness to explore and fuse different sounds together. 'Viridian' has a wonderful summer groove to it, but the break downs in the drum patterns delve into some deeper vibes. Without being to formulaic, do you feel that seasons and time of year reflect the mood and style of what your creating?GRYN: When we first started producing under the GRYN name, we were really conscious of the sound we were putting out. We wanted to have congruency across our tracks, and once we received positive feedback on our more bass and tech-influenced tracks, we stayed in that genre for a while. But more recently, we’ve been trying to forget about genre and just produce what we’re into (which is a lot of different things.) We’re all about the summer vibes, but we love getting down to some crazy, bassy tribal shit just as much. You can really hear the variety of influences on each of our tracks.MP: Staying on the topic of production. What are you guys listening to at the moment? Who and what techniques are inspiring your own process?GRYN: Kenton Slash Demon just put out some absolutely fire tracks on Future Classic recently. We’ve also been really into the funkier side of house music, with new releases from NVOY, Pomo, and Icarus on repeat. We’ve been listening to a lot of the future genre as well. Artists like Cofresi, Big Wild, and Louis the Child. The production in the future and organic genres is just next level in our opinion.MP: As you mentioned in your Discovery article, live tracking has become more prominent in your process. Do you see your performances eventually including more live instrumentation as well?GRYN: One of our main goals is to eventually incorporate live instrumentation into our shows. Being from musical backgrounds, it’s always been a dream of ours to truly perform the music we produce. We want to start with live sampling over our DJ sets, and slowly make our way into the live performance realm known to Classixx, Disclosure, Odesza, and a bunch of others.MP: Now let's get serious. Traditional mezcal or tequila? On the rocks or straight up?GRYN: We’ve always been tequila guys, not to say we don’t enjoy a nice mezcal (worm included, please.) But if we’re getting serious… Añejo or Resposado tequila, neat. You don’t need it chilled if you’re drinking the good stuff.MP: Now that the beards have gone and run off into the wild will you be considering any shaving sponsorship?GRYN: Hell yeah. Dollar Shave Club, where you at?
