LAMP Weekly Mix #67 feat. Brady Spear
We've been looking forward to having this cat on our rotation for a little while now. Today we're very excited to announce Fortune 421's very own Brady Spear as our guest for this week's mix. Let him guide you through some new tunes mixed in with our favorite jams and classics to round out 55 minutes of dance floor stomping, sweat dripping goodness.Check out the exclusive interview he had with MR PUZL below:MR PUZL: Tell us a bit about Fortune 421. You had originally started DJ'ing for them and eventually became their Music Director. How has your relationship with the brand grown? What do enjoy about being in this role? Brady Spear: Fortune has been around since 2005 and we’ve got an eclectic mix of DJs, producers, athletes, nightlife industry all-stars, philanthropists, and supporters. A lot of great, like-minded people. The first Fortune event I went to was in 2008. At the time, they were the only ones I knew who were throwing huge parties in San Diego focused on house music… It wasn’t until 2010 that I started DJ'ing for them. It was at a Coachella party that they helped produce. Jason Herrick and I became good friends over the years and shared a similar vision and taste in music. In 2012 I came on board as their music director and the rest is history. MP: As a music director you have the opportunity to listen to copious amounts of really great music. How do you keep track? Do you have any advice for artists trying to get their work on the label?BS: I do get a lot of awesome stuff sent my way… A lot of which will be coming out soon on Fortune 421 Music. As for advice, make something that sounds different. I hear a lot of cookie cutter tracks out there. Don’t get caught up in what everyone likes right now. Find a new sound and run with it.MP: Where do you see Fortune 421 going in the next few years? Do you have any upcoming events or news you can share with us?BS: We’ve got a lot going on with the label, clothing line, events and philanthropy. We’ve also just launched Jetset, our concierge and travel service. We’re expecting a huge 2015 and beyond. We’ve got our ten year anniversary parties coming up next week. We’re hitting both the San Diego and Vegas markets for this one. On Tuesday 4/21 (our actual anniversary) we’ll be at Parq, San Diego with Robbie Rivera. 4/25-4/27 we’ll be in Vegas for 7 parties in 3 days. We’ll be at Light, Daylight, Drai’s Beach and Nightclubs, Life, XS and Foxtail. We’ve got Fortune artists at every event. Going to be a great week!MP: You've had a great impact on the scene there and helped it grow significantly over the past few years. What do you like specifically about the city and it's vibe that makes it so unique? BS: San Diego has a very tight knit community of house music lovers. We’ve got crews bringing in the best names in house, deep house, tech house and techno. I think what makes San Diego unique is that we’re able to bring in the same talent as cities like LA or New York to a market that isn’t necessarily known for its history of house music. We’ve got a clean slate to work with.MP: You've mentioned that some of your earliest influences came from the French producers like Alan Braxe, Cassius and Daft Punk. How have you seen the french house scene transform over the years? BS: It seems like the French house sound has now evolved into what everyone considers nu-disco. I think traditional French house has disappeared a bit. I still hear bits and pieces of it in new music, but it’s not that same as it used to be.MP: How have your influences evolved? Do you find yourself still revisiting those earlier sounds?BS: Recently I’ve been really into techno, tech house, deep house, g-house and booty bass… but those first influences of house, french house, disco, techno and electro will always be where my love of electronic music began. MP: What other genres are really catching your ear at the moment?BS: I’m loving the reemergence of UK speed garage, 2 step and bass music in the US. I feel like the sounds of the 90s are making a huge comeback in general.MP: If you had round trip flight paid for, where would you want to travel to and perform?BS: I would have to say Warung Beach Club in Brazil. That place is legendary. Seems like a magical place to play some house music.MP: There are several prominent names that you've been fortunate enough to share the stage with. Were there any specific sets that you witnessed that had an impact on your own career? BS: Hands down, Daft Punk at Coachella 2006. Homework was the album that got me info house music. I had such high expectations for that performance and they definitely lived up to them. Not sure if I’ll ever see anything like that again.
