LAMP Weekly Mix #125 feat PZBL

With the month of June close at hand and several opportunities coming up to hit the decks, I thought it fitting to give you a taste of what you might expect if you catch me at any of my upcoming performances. I am really excited for the opportunity to share a booth with the Bedrock Records legend Guy J and join my compadre MR. PUZL twice for some pool shenanigans, along with a stop on the pier with Daedalus and finishing up the month in Baja for Genius Loci Fest.I wish I could say a ton of thought went into this mix but that just wasn't the case. We had another artist scheduled that unfortunately was unable to come through at the last minute. Monday afternoon I got the notice, so I immediately went into digging mode for a few hours before putting these 15 tracks together. A friend of mine asked me the other day how I record my mixes. He was wondering if I used Ableton or mixed live on CDJ's. In the past I used Ableton mostly because I didn't have a proper sound card to get quality live recordings. In the last couple of years I have beefed up my studio to allow myself to record live again. Now I like to go back to how I used to do things when I was mixing only vinyl.I used to have a Tascam recording device that took high quality line in recordings. I didn't have any audio editing software or know what the hell I was doing back then so I just did one take recordings. It is the way I recorded the mix I submitted for an opportunity to play at Coachella(which I got by the way) back in 2011 and pretty much how I did things. I switched to controllers for a couple of years after that until I got CDJ's in 2013. It is always my primary goal when preparing a mix to make sure it tells a story. To often I think DJ's get caught up in playing what ever is hot on the charts or getting played on the radio or clubs non-stop. If that is what you are into then by all means keep doing it. I know that there are times when you must play to your audience and times when you have to play what's popular. There are also times when it is important to explore what other music is available to you. If I walked down the street and asked 15 random people who any of the 15 artists were on the playlist I would be hard pressed to find anyone that knows any of them. Some of these artists are at the top of the game so it just goes to show how underground house and techno still is even in this new world where EDM is the dominant force in music and summer festivals. In this mix you will find music from labels and artists that I have been quite fond of over the years. I wouldn't say I have been religious about acquiring the music from these labels but it is safe to say that I have a very healthy supply of music from Off Records, Suara, Save Us, Crosstown Rebels, Parquet, Steyoyoke, Sincopat and Get Physical. They are the top of the top for me when it comes to selecting quality productions to release. In addition the list of artist included in this mix is fricking amazing. It makes me happy that on top of it kicking the mix off is one of our own releases from PUZL Records setting the tone and standing up with this top notch group of tracks. In retrospect after it is all said and done my main hope is that you enjoy the mix and that I do justice to the original producers and show them the credit they deserve.
