LAMP Weekly Mix #112 feat. Boots n Pants

LA Based duo Boots N Pants got down and dirty with their latest Guest Mix throwing down some hip hop and funk vibes sewn aggressively together with some raw bass laden beats. A staple in the DIM MAK and Buygore discography, with some superb remixes, we get a little feature of a forthcoming original as well as a new one from the 219 Boys. MR PUZL got to chat with the boys about everything from thumb wars to getting into a fight with Puss N Boots.MR PUZL: You open with a choice tune from one of my favorite Middle School groups, Quad City DJs. What was the inspiration for this mix?Boots N Pants: Your taste in music was next level in middle school! We actually rediscovered that track while binging on some classic booty house recently, and figured it would be the perfect opener to the mix. Overall we hoped to channel the vibe of LAMP's desert camping parties by combining a blend of upbeat house with the heady, trippier tech stuff, including some fresh new tracks and some funkier throwbacks.MP: How much would you pay for some Damn Daniel's? Going rate last week was $300K...BNP: Hahaha we’ve seen that. Maybe he would just give them to us if we changed our name to 'Damn Daniels N Pants’ ;)MP: Your sound has developed since your first remix, 'Control'. What sort of tracks are you currently drawn towards remixing?BNP: To be honest we have always been down to work on any project available. That remix was awesome because it was the first time the two of us ever collaborated and we also LOVE Scanners. We are both musicians with a rock/funk/blues background and we love old school hip hop, so those vibes definitely come through whatever we work on. We try to take remixes in a dramatically different direction than the original, so we are excited about anything that we can challenge ourselves with.MP: We heard a Boots N Pants original in this mix along with something forthcoming from 219 Boys. Will this be your first original release?BNP: Ahhhh that one is actually a remix - it’s coming out soon, but hasn’t been announced yet. We figured we should keep it on the DL, but we are really pumped on it and can’t wait to blast it out! The second track on the mix is a super fresh ID from the homies 219 Boys. Those dudes fucking rock, we are actually wrapping an original collab together hopefully soon. Very excited about that one!MP: Do you guys have a process when working together in the studio?BNP: We don’t necessarily have a “process,” but our whole apartment is full of misc studio and band gear. We can turn our living rooms into rehearsal space that would make a psychedelic MacGyver proud. We flip mattresses against windows for mixing and build heavy blanket forts in the closet to record track vocals and sample instruments and whatnot. When inspiration strikes we pretty much always have our place wired to make noise and record within a few minutes. Our motto when we write music is, “Keep it simple, fat and funky.” That counts as a process yeah? HahahaMP: If you guys had a thumb war. Who would win?BNP: Jenks has the size and power but Evan has the agility and coordination. We'd probably tie a few times, shotgun a beer and call it a day.MP: Both of you are extremely busy during the day working some badass jobs. How do you squeeze in studio time and gigs?BNP: We are both very lucky to work in careers within the music industry. Between nightclub day managing and day-to-day and tour managing, we are surrounded by the energy and processes of the musicians that already inspire us. We both learn a lot from our day jobs and that gives us a really unique perspective as artists. We are both based in LA much more than we had been for the past year or so; it’s exciting to start playing more around town and mix it up more with some really talented people.MP: How many slices of pizza have you consumed at Space Yacht? Ever.BNP: Math is hard. One metric butt load?MP: What's the craziest thing that's ever happened on a Dim Mak tour that you can legally talk about?BNP: Hahaha that’s an easy one. Last year at TomorrowLand in Belgium Ookay was playing at the Dim Mak stage. The party was super sick and the stage production was quite epic. During Chris Lorenzo’s set, which redefined gnarly per usual, the wind got a little crazy for a minute. While that was going on there was a huge pyro blast, which is essentially a flame thrower, and the wind blew the flame down and actually set the roof of the DJ booth on fire for a minute or two. Luckily it was raining, so we didn’t have to call the EDM Fire Dept and it was a funny story instead.MP: Who are some artists you're into at the moment that we should keep an ear out for?BNP: Dirtybird has always been a major inspiration to us so that whole roster is always at the top of our playlists. Lately we have been all about Billy Kenny and the This Ain’t Bristol label. Kyle Watson and Abby Jane, to name only a few, have some seriously cool tracks. Pretty much every tune that crew puts out is killer. From a live scene context, the Space Yacht parties are full of local LA up and comers and they also happen to be fun as hell. Hands down our favorite parties to play, with or without the pizza ;)MP: Where can we find you guys throwing down next?BNP: We just played a party with our homies at Ezekiel at The Wayfarer in Costa Mesa, that one was an absolute blast. Nothing on the books officially till after Miami, but the loveliest part about LA is the unannounced B2B sets :)MP: Lastly and most importantly. What would you do if you ran into Puss n Boots in a dark alley?BNP: Well, we would have no choice but to have a dance battle, very similar to ‘You Got Served’ but with way more 808s.
