Track of the Day: Turbo Turbo - Atlas
With a week leading up to a more laid back and calm set on Sunday poolside with the LAMP family I thought I'd pick the opening tune in my mix to line up a little more with that aesthetic. We've got an exciting event with the Fortune 421 crew at the Hollywood Roosevelt and their promises to be a ton of house and disco to sooth your soul under the warm rays. However, I digress as it's only Wednesday and we still have so much music to explore!
Track of the Day: Turbo Turbo - Atlas
'Atlas' is one of those pleasantly deceptive tunes that feels like you're about to get hit with some full on techno but as the track quickly progresses it reveals a softer more inviting house side to its character. A big metallic crash sets off the driving kick that initially gave me the impression that I was in for one of Turbo Turbo's slamming warehouse bangers. As the low pass filter peels back on the percussion layers we start to hear a raspy clap and sharp staccato shaker take hold of the rhythm. Another slow modulated low pass filter introduces the lead synth (comprised of a lovely disco inspired set of strings) that sync nicely with a single note piano stab on the tail end of each 4 bar loop. Timing in the transitions from the bridge to chorus are fantastic and really build the energy up nicely allowing the groove to flow seamlessly through the composition.Speaking of, the layers of this track while I'm sure were painstakingly crafted and perfected embody the art of beautiful simplicity. The arrangement of 'Atlas', from a wholistic sense, is measured. The elements contained within it can be broken down into a set of drums, a looped lead synth, a series of FX'd pads and environmental sounds and modulated filters. I dare to say it's easy and that would take away from the joy I have in both listening and playing this track out, but I more so admire the ease in which the track progresses and fits so well into any type of house/techno set.Check out the 2 track EP here as well. The opening tune Core Cell is a monster, techno thumper:Not that I know Bernd and Manfred personally or whether they even go by those names amongst their friends but the duo who make up Turbo Turbo are some of my favorite techno producers of the last few years. Their alignment with S-File's GND Records on their debut EP 'Swab' (a superb electro infused dance release) to this latest diverse 2 track drop has solidified their name amongst some of the best in house and techno. Taking stock of their discography you can hear a diverse range of styles that fall neatly in the spectrum of the genres I mentioned before. My favorite thing about these two is that they almost always release at least one uptempo house-infused track amongst their signature, pounding techno tunes. Core Cell is a perfect example of this Jekyll & Hyde effect and one of the many reasons I look forward to their new releases.Talk about doing some techno crate digging, I highly recommend this and the tracklist is posted right on SC for ya to make it easy.Check out this an other tracks from my LAMP Weekly Mix below:
