Track of the Day: Somersault - Space Is Big
This week we've got a special guest mix coming from my own big bro 333! He sent me a recording of it recently and, bias aside, I was hooked immediately. The reason for that would be the track I'm reviewing today, 'Space Is Big', from Aussie based producer Somersault out via Particles.
Somersault - Space Is Big
From the moment Space is Big kicks off you are immediately transported above the atmosphere into a calming, weightless expanse. Long, grainy synth chords slowly build under a collection of soft percussion layers while a driving kick pushes the energy of the track forward. A hit of soft synth pads dance lightly between each downbeat adding a nice groove to the tracks overall rhythm. A dreamy guitar riff guides us through the breakdown with a series phased claps and closed hi-hat hits slowly progressing back towards the main groove and synth line. A deeper steccato bass line is slowly brought to the forefront and rides nicely with each kick providing subtle but welcoming variation to the composition. Overall the track is powerful but calming and would provide a wonderful addition to any DJ's repetoire.Check out the full collection from the release below:Somersault aka Jim Wilson is definitely on a strong path with both this release and the follow up EP release 'Devotion / Respect' on Build It Records. Having performed as a funk guitarist early on in his career he also developed acute production skills working with Jon Convex and has appeared at numerous festivals to date. With each release we can hear Wilson's finely tuned musician ship in composition and detailed sections of his tracks. His awareness of the scene's constant flux and melting pot of genres demonstrates that he is not afraid to try something new with each release. This young producer has clearly got a fruitful career ahead and we cannot wait to hear more.

Regarding Particles (previously known as Proton Particles), I've just begun to scratch the surface on these guys and already want to purchase all of their catalog. As part of the Proton Radio collective the label has amassed a wonderful collection of artist producing everything from traditional Progressive House to Techno. According to Discogs they started releasing music back in 2009 and also kicked off a wonderful compilation series known as Summer Particles. Delve deeper into their collection below.Enjoy,MR PUZL
