Macca & Loz Contreras - Honey Sugar

Macca & Loz Contreras drizzle 'Honey Sugar' over your speakers with sounds as sweet as it reads; a true liquid style that pours on the love. Soft echoing vocal loops and a classic breakbeat kick this track off; flooding your ears with soulful goodness. As I mentioned earlier this week, Liquid holds a special place in my music collection. It steers away from some of the more aggressive kicks and gritty bass lines with out really losing the tempo and drive that is commonplace within the genre. Furthermore, it constantly references and samples classic soul, jazz and RnB sounds which immediately appeal to me aesthetically. I also have a great deal of respect for modern DnB artists bridging the gap of time periods and styles that on paper seem so drastically different. To say the least, it is a style that is lighter on the ear and became particularly popular in mainstream UK music as the entire Drum & Bass genre exploded in the early 90s as it was more "radio" friendly. In case you're wondering 'Honey Sugar' borrows its vocals from an old blues classic by Tyron Davis 'In The Mood':'Honey Sugar' came out early last year as an EP called 'Always Your Lover' on Fokuz Records that shone a spotlight on 2 rising producers in the DnB landscape, Macca & Loz Contreras. Fokuz are a Dutch outfit from Rotterdam that as a label focus on releasing soulful Drum & Bass, and a subsidiary of another Rotterdam distribution company Triple Vision. Based out of Leeds Loz Contreras has a slew of solid releases across the board of DnB labels as well as residencies at some the genres prominent nights and venues. Contreras' counterpart in this production, Macca, is based out of Portsmouth and has shared similar success releasing on similar labels including Celsius Recordings the sister label to Fokuz. If you're feeling the vibe today and want some more smooth jams have a listen to a few other Fokuz releases below:Listen to this and other tracks from this week's Guest Mix by Jeff Devoe:Enjoy,MR PUZL
