Track of the Day: Funkwerkstatt - Bam Bam Buhle
Music discovery is one of the most rewarding and important processes as a DJ and producer. There is a plethora of resources and tools to help you with this endeavour but at the end of the day it's an investment of your time that requires a bit of focus. Personally, I usually have Soundcloud on recommended play constantly in my headphones while monitoring a few different private Facebook Groups and checking in periodically on some of my favorite blogs. I usually don't tout Soundcloud's recommendation algorithm but it served me well today. After listening to our newly minted PUZL Records EP Motor by new LAMP family member Dan Jedynak (yes shameless plug) I got thrown into this awesome track by Berlin based artist Funkwerkstatt called 'Bam Bam Buhle' and couldn't resist a writeup.
Funkwerkstatt - Bam Bam Buhle
The drums in this track are really what hooked me in, right from the intro. The grainy, raspy, claps with that attack turned way up are really catchy. They rest nicely in between a really phased out hi-hat loop and heavily FX'd snare building the framework of a jackin' style beat that eventually blends into more traditional style tech house rhythms when the kick punches in along with a pulsating UK style sub injecting that head nodding groove into the arrangement. Some hand drum loops are introduced progressing the percussion layer into an entirely new arrangement. Speaking of which, the breakdown welcomes a whole new feeling to the composition including, what sounds like, a heavily detuned organ synth bouncing overtop of that sub bass. Bell synths add some extra character to the high end and panning fast-paced hi-hats echo around which somewhat distract you as the style of track seems to morph into a kick driven tech house thumper. The track's predominant hashtag is labeled Deep House but honestly there's so much diversity and all around fun engaging elements to this track that the genre application seems to do it a bit of injustice. All in all 'Bam Bam Buhle' gets down to business early on and it's quirky lead gives you just the right amount of weird that seems to permeate from Funkwerkstatt's aesthetic and modus operandi.Something that seems to be a running trend with Funkwerkstatt is the expertly crafted bass lines in his productions such as in 'Melodie für Millionen':Also really into the woodblock and sharp synths in this tune, 'Bunga Bunga':Funkwerkstatt originally started in 1999 as a band consisting of Derrick Porter and Nicola John with singer Dan Morro joining the duo later on in 2004. Predominantly through releases via their own label, Superfancy, the group amassed a healthy discography enlisting the remixing talents of the industry best such as Purple Disco Machine, Kellerkind, John Dahlback, Spirit Catcher and many more. Clearly a local favorite and deeply ingrained in the Berlin scene Funkwerkstatt and the Superfancy imprint have run under the proverbial radar stateside.Check out this mix celebrating 10 years anniversary of Superfancy with their latest compilation featuring remixes and unreleased originals from the likes of Kolombo, Format:B, Carsten Rausch and more:Enjoy,MR PUZL
