Track of the Day: Bodhi - Step It Back

bodhiSince our a few of our crew are recovering/still partying at Desert Hearts this weekend I decided to step in and do a bit of writing this week and to kick it off I've got a proper tune from Black Butter regulars Bodhi. Their ascent amongst the UK house ranks is already well documented with a previous release on Black Butter as well as industry leaders Food, Rinse, Exploited and Ten Thousand Yen to name just a few. The duo are on a cruising trajectory and I cannot wait for what's in store for the rest of their 2016.

Bodhi - Step It Back

'Step It Back' is part of a 2 track EP release that sees the UK duo displaying their unique acid house sound design atop of rhythms and beats that are reminiscent of early trip-hop. A fantastic bass line weaves together with jackin' percussion layers while a deep classic house vocal cut commands the beat with each passing loop. What I really started to hear after a few listens was this super cool zipping pad that comes in at the 3rd beat of the bar. It provides such a nice interruption to the four to the floor kick riding along underneath the lead. A delayed and heavily FX'd 'woo' vox sample rides off the back of that pad spanning into the next drum hit creating dynamic range within the mix. The arrangement is charged with all sorts of energetic shifts creating a healthy diversity in the overall composition. Bodhi love delving into engaging breakdowns full of modulation and exploring a host analog synthesis within their work to create true originality with every release. Their works are always supplemented with strong visuals so you can tell that they definitely consider their work as art from a very high level.Fucking love this teaser video, and the incredible artwork done by SnowSkull.Having both been musicians for several years, Luke and Olly aka Bodhi, met in their Welsh hometown of Cardiff and began a journey into dance music that has seen support of their music transmitted across the airwaves and into the hands of prolific and prominent DJs across the globe. Now a staple of the Black Butter family, known for their exceptional purveyance of talented musicians, means the duo are in good hands. This second track 'Time Warp' is set to be released soon, and the EP will hopefully set in motion a tour date or two here in California ;)
