Track of the Day: Blunted Dummies - House For All (Ruede Hagelstein Ecstatic Dub)
Get Physical if you are not familiar is one of the top labels in the world when it comes to music of many different genres but generally what they do and they do it better than most is "House". This week I got tagged in last minute to put together this weeks LAMP Weekly Mix. So there is plenty of tracks for me to choose to write about today. I immediately chose the last song in my mix for today's Track of the Day as it has stuck with me since the first time I heard it a few weeks ago. I didn't intend on using it when I started recording but about 5 tracks into the mix I decided I really wanted to work it in and try to make it the last song. So basically the last 45 minutes is me working up to playing this one song because I enjoy it so much. It has a infectious groove taking on a grandiose feel as each new element of the track introduces itself. The vocal samples accentuated by higher toned synths, fluttering and bouncing throughout the mix, are mixed and placed perfectly throughout the arrangement. Keeping things interesting are tricked out (sort of), old school tape/delay style FX on the vocal at times. I am also a huge fan of the pads that Hagelstein uses. They really feel like they are there the entire time but don't start to become noticeable until about 2:20, and really punch in at 2:40. They add depth and really give the song a light and airy feel. Overall this song has an extremely refreshing tone to it. It is inspiring and the kind of song I want to listen to when I get home after a rough day, or want to get my day started off on the right foot. This song took me on a bit of a journey today. Doing a bit of research I found that the original release of 'House For All' was way back in 1993. To make things even cooler they got the legendary John Acquaviva who remixed the original in '93 to jump on board with an edit as well. Speaking of the original, released by Definitive Recordings (who I could write a whole post about on its own probably 2 or 3 to be honest), it became a bit of a history lesson for me today. About half way through you can hear the vocal sample from 'Check the Rhyme' from Tribe Called Quest which gt me thinking what other samples might be hiding in there. Come to find out those pads, they are also in the original and sampled from a Bobby Konders house track from 1990 'The Poem'. This ultimately led me to the 70's band The Blackbyrds where the main vocal comes from. A track they put out in 1975 'Happy Music'. I got stuck here for a while going through what ever I could find from The Blackbyrds. They had some serious grooves going on back in the day, aaaah disco! So much history in one track, going back 40 years. Just goes to show what you can discover in music when you scratch beneath the surface.Check today's track out and a whole bunch more in my mix this week for LAMP down below.
