Track of the Day: S.P.Y - BRSTL Hardcore
S.P.Y - BRSTL Hardcore
S.P.Y delivers a gargantuan bass track in 'BRSTL Hardcore' that not only emulates it's name but also pays homage to the 90s style. The track opens up with an eerie echoing synth note and an open percussive sound that sets the tone immediately. A gritty electro synth begins creeping in (a sound that many early dubstep followers will recognize) that sets the stage for a most intense and delightfully crunchy bass drop. The mastering and sound design on this particular component is exceptional, with attention to detail on every component of this modulation that allows everything from your cheap of-the-shelf headphones to those thumping monitors in your studio to really enjoy its resonance. Apart from a looping 'Bass' vocal cut the track predominantly focuses on what D&B tracks do best, layers upon layers of percussive change-ups and driving kicks. Not for the feint of heart, S.P.Y is a sign that Drum & Bass is still very much alive and its influences are being carried forward by producers who truly care about it's roots and the subsequent progression of its sounds. It's been sometime since I've properly listened to Drum & Bass, and this week I'll be delving in head first as we thumb through Devoe's extensive tracklist for this week's mix. Luckily S.P.Y (aka Carlos Lima) is my official return to this genre and I am very happy to report that D&B followers are in good hands with this producer. This Brazilian born, London based beatmaker has done solid work for the scene over the last decade and made his mark early on in his career with releases on Ministry of Sound and featured work on legendary DJ and RAM co founder Andy C's 'Nightlife' compilations. He has gained recoginition from some of the scene's most influential tastemakers and producers such as LTJ Bukem and Chase & Status. With this latest release on NEST it reinforces the idea that genre's never truly disappear and they are reincarnated dependent on the current trends in music and sometimes to great effect. If your eardrums haven't had enough from this tune we highly recommend listening to it's counterpart in the EP release 'Mass Effect.Enjoy,MR PUZL
