Track of the Day: Rex The Dog - Teufelsberg
I'm excited today to bring Rex the Dog to the LAMP track of the day selections. I remember the first track I came across of theirs that got me interested and it came in the form of a massive remix pack for 'Bubblicious' back in 2008. I had never heard of them before but the Zoo Brazil remix really caught my attention as did the Felix Da Housecat remix. Here we are in 2016 and they are still at it with a spectacular release for Kompakt a couple of months ago. I am a really big fan of their synth pop techno vibe. 'Tuefelsberg' is tops on my list right now for tracks that I simply cant get enough of. You only get a brief snippet above and the album version is almost 7 min long. It is hard for me to describe this track because every part of sticks out. A tight punchy kick and plucky synth start the track off kicking it off with a driving groove accentuated by a myriad of clicks and pops. A little ways through a grainy but delightful synth which winds up being the lead sort of teases its way in building intensity. All of this eventually gives way to the break where the lead takes on a very trance like state as a very appropriate old West German Spy recording plays in the background before bringing the groove back in and driving the track home. When ever I listen to this track I feel as if I am being taken on a journey. This track generally gives me the sensation of riding on a big white flying dog if you catch my drift. I found this really cool video they posted on their Youtube channel you should definitely check out. They are playing a 3 and a half minute version of the song on their modular which I found to be pretty mesmerizing. I found this very informative interview on Synthtopia you should 100 percent read if you want to know more about the different modular instruments as well as how some of the sounds were created in this track."Rex The Dog is Jake Williams and a dog called Rex. They make music with synthesisers, they make remixes, art and animation and they run a regular club night at Dalston Superstore in London called BREED." I pulled this quote from their website. Even though Rex the Dog is only one person I really like how Williams has integrated this character Rex into his overall persona. Lately they have been making their home with Kompakt records and have seen a few really successful releases in the last 2 years. 'Sicko' was huge in my opinion, followed up with 'You are a Blade' and this latest one 'Tuefelsberg'. With their modular in tow and new instruments adding to the rack, Rex the Dog look to continue to bring us much more in the future. I know am looking forward to what comes next from them. Especially if it continues to inspire really cool modular videos like this one.Hope you are all getting ready for your Friday. It is a big weekend here in So Cal.
