Track of the Day: Housekeeping - Mickey Finn
Track of the Day: Housekeeping - Mickey Finn
This week we welcomed extremely talented and musically passionate Kevin McKay to our guest mix series. His mix for us this week is absolutely incredible and full of tracks from his label Glasgow Underground as well as a couple others from outside the label. We talk quite a bit about the label and much more is on the way so I grabbed a track from from the middle of his mix from Housekeeping for our track of the day. The debut release for Housekeeping Records "Start's With a Little" comes from the founders who hold the same moniker. The EP consists of 3 tracks "Da Na Na", "Start's With A Little" and our track of the day from McKay's mix is titled "Mickey Finn". Got a little curious as to who or what Mickey Finn was and found out it is basically slang for a drink that is meant to incapacitate someone. There have also been a handful of musicians that have given themselves that name or had the unfortunate circumstance of winning the name lottery. Maybe it has a different meaning to the producers, regardless it is a great track. In fact it is quite the opposite of incapacitating, if anything it gives me more of an euphoric sensation. A rich bass line that rumbles along with a subtle conga, highlight the intro while the group builds up the groove. Not long into the track they introduce a bouncy synth lead which really gives the track a light and airy tone, really taking flight when the intoxicating vocal chorus is added. The track really does a great job of telling a story in my mind. From my perspective I hear three distinct sections. The intro and buildup basically introducing all of the main characters and the elements of the groove. The middle/body of the story which is really just the breakdown setting up the climax when all the characters come together. Finally the conclusion where we get a nice helping of what we got in the climax before everyone just sort of rides off into the sunset. For sure got to keep my eyse on Housekeeping. I strongly recommend checking out the two other tracks on this EP as well. Had it not already been premiered I would have for sure chosen 'Da Na Na' as our Track of the Day. That track is a beast!Make sure to check out our weekly mix series if you haven't yet. This week we have Glasgow Underground boss Kevin McKay in the mix. You can listen to the mix below. Mr PUZL has also put together a wonderful interview that is a great read click here for that.
