Track of the Day: Ambivalent - Whyou - Michael Mayer Mix
Going to be talking about a person who has a massive influence in my musical life today. Michael Mayer is the label boss of Kompakt Records. Earlier this month on for Speicher 92 he got together with Ambivalent to release the 'Whyou' Single for which he has also created a mix. A solid driving tech house track. Characterized by a stabbing synth that sounds like a cross between a harpsichord and a piano. The prominent moog from the original sits soflty underneath making the song feel very warm and cozy as the vocal slightly modified is chopped and spread throughout the mix. In the middle of the track during the break Mayer adds some crazy echo sounding thing. It sounds like a bunch of raindrops plucking a string. Pretty cool stuff, definitely made me stop and take a second glance at what I was hearing.Ambivalents track is off the charts incredible as well. A highly energetic and massive tune. The rumbling moog synth in the breakdown of the track, builds up an immense amount of tension with the vocal whining in the back ground. Like a wave crashing on the shore the moog gradually gaining in intensity as a snare drum fliters in the background along with the vocal each gradually building and piling up on themselves until the moog drops out and the wave crashes reintroducing the groove and releasing the building tension. The snippets are really short so here are the full versions from their website with a few vinyl breaks for security measures. Gonna have to go out and support that shit if you want to listen the full version. Or you could always get it on vinyl. One of the aspects of this blog is I come across new little pieces of information. I have been collecting releases from Kompakt Records for quite sometime. Today mostly in the digital format although I have a some of the older ones in my vinyl collection back when we used carry crates instead of thumb drives. I have been familiar with Michael Mayer for a little while but had no idea he was the head of one of my favorite labels. Kompakt Recordings which is actually a huge collection of labels one of which is Kompakt Extra and Speicher, putting out music within it as far back as 1999. I am pretty sure that I have all 92 of them and if I don't I will be rectifying that very quickly. As you can here from above and below he is one hell of a producer as well. I recently played a festival sunrise set and started it of with 'Dogma 2' a track he made with Kolsch a regular on the Kompakt label as well. If you are a vinyl junkie Kompakt is a great place to get some incredible records so head over and check out their catalog when you get a chance. If you need something to get your weekend kicked off right make sure you check out our weekly mix series. This week we had Arms & Legs co-founder Nils Orhman on the decks so make sure you get it in your rotation.
