LAMP Weekly Mix #95 feat. J. Worra

When we first met J. Worra she had just recently moved to LA from Chicago. Over time we got to know her more both through her performances and excellent releases on labels like Perfect Driver Music, Sleazy G and forthcoming on Audiophile XXL. We've had the honor of having her over for our weekly studio sessions and now the distinct pleasure of welcoming her to our ‪#‎weeklymix‬ family! MR PUZL and PZB got the chance to ask this rising producer a few questions about her beginnings as a producer and moving from one of the mecca's of house music to the city of angels.MR PUZL: We got a sneak peak of your mix last week, and we're stoked on it. Do you have anything to share about the tracks you picked and the style you were going for?J.Worra: I am glad you liked it! I actually haven't done a mix in awhile... for this one I loved digging back to some older tracks that have inspired some of my production and also some tracks of other artists who have been supporting me.PZB: You came to LA about a year ago. What was the motivation for moving here?JW: My move here was the product of so many things... I had been in Chicago for 5 years and grown immensely musically, but it was time for a new chapter. So, I picked up and moved to West.PZB: What are some of the main differences in the club scene here in LA compared to Chicago?JW: The club scene, hmmm..I think the makeup of the club scene is similar but to be honest I haven't been in the club much, I have gone to Sound and Exchange. Sound is pretty similar to Spybar in terms of layout and and artists they bring- I can't wait to play there.PZB: Having got your start in Chicago a couple years back, how would you compare the style of music you were producing then versus now?JW: I have only been producing for 3 years so the time I spent in Chicago was very exploratory and about finding my sound. It was a very crucial part of my development and I am thankful that I was in a city that is so rich in talent. There are some really awesome producers in Chicago who were willing to always teach- no questions asked. Bentley-Dean and Win and Woo are some of the guys that helped a ton.MP: Chicago is a city rich in history when it comes music, especially House. Growing up there, who were some of the artists that influenced you and motivated you to start producing?JW: I remember hearing the Green Velvet/ Gene Farris New Gotham EP in early 2011..I had always listened to a lot of different genres of music but that stopped me in my tracks. From then on I started digging deeper and deeper into what house music was and branched out to other artists. It was soon after I fell in love with UK bass heavy house music...in particularly anything Chris Lorenzo touched.MP: What other styles of music do you draw inspiration from?JW: I listen to a lot of different stuff but when it comes from inspiration- anything that is weird.PZB: Has being in LA had any influence the style of music you are producing currently?JW: From my time in Chicago to my time here in LA, my production style hasn't really changed but I have pushed to learn more and also better execute my ideas. I think being in LA has exposed me to more artists and other roles within the music world. The greatest thing LA has given me is the ability to see beyond what I thought was possible and the mindset to continue to set higher and higher goals...its definitely a baby steps kind of situation but I am thankful to be where I am. PZB: Groups like the Nap Girls have been helping to raise awareness regarding gender equality in the music industry. What perspective and insight do you have on this issue? JW: Nap Girls...they are dope. Well I should say WE are dope. I am a recent addition to the Nap Girls group and I couldn't be more excited about it. I have never felt empowered to make a change because I am only one person..but the group is a united front and thanks to Liz Garard, women in the industry don't have to just deal with it anymore, we can tackle it head-on as a team.MP: What advice would you give to other women looking to pursue a career in this industry?JW: Just go for it.. Keep your head down and work, don't talk just work. Surround yourself with people who want to help and lift you up- those people should stay close and never be taken for granted. Don't let anyone tell you that you cannot be this or that. When I was first starting out, this one promoter told me I would never get booked with the name "J. Worra"...sup brahh.PZB: You have the opportunity to play as well as host your own stage at a festival, including yourself obviously, who are the 5 people you would want to share the stage with?JW:1. Bentley-Dean- Chicago artist and one of my best friends and a huge up and comer...he has taught me so much and never once asked for anything in return2. Chris Lorenzo3. Taiki Nulight4. Hannah Wants5. Will Clarke6. Surprise guest DJ Donald TrumpPZB: Our first exposure to your music was with your release 'Substitute' for Perfect Driver. Since then you have had you've had successful releases on Brooklyn Fire and Sleazy G. Do you have any other releases coming up in the near future you can tell us about?JW: Perfect Driver was the first label to give me a shot, the label boss- Matthew Anthony has some amazing stuff going on. I have a release coming up in December with Audiophile XXL called "I Boss" (It is the 4th track on the LAMP mix). I also am sitting on a few unsigned tracks that I am pretty excited about. I am in no rush to put stuff out though, I have put a some tracks out too soon out of pure excitement and as I move forward I want to be more patient.
