LAMP Weekly Mix #92 feat. Roman Perry
LAMP Weekly Mix #92 feat. Roman Perry
I first met Roman Perry during one of our LAMPING excursions. He pulled up in a car with a few friends in the middle of the night, introduced himself and told us that his bud Nathan had told him to come out to our event. We were excited and astonished that someone had made the commitment to come out to one of our events, mainly because the trek takes several hours and it's fucking remote!! Long story short we loved the energy and eclectic style that Roman brought to the table and it meshed well with our overall vibe. I got the chance to talk with Roman on his journey west and his ambitions here in the city of angels, check it out below.MR PUZL: What do you want to tell our audience about your mix and some tracks you've chosen?Roman Perry: Normally the type of music I play is a little more turned up than what's on here - this is something I want someone to be able to listen to in a more relaxed setting. When I approach making a mix like this it's not the same approach I have as when I'm DJing a party. I'd like to think of this as a playlist I would throw together for a loved one as opposed to "this is what I spin." There are still some jams in here for sure, but there’s a lot of feeling too. Over the past year I’ve experienced a lot of change in my life and in some ways this mix is a reflection of that. MP: You just recently moved from Boston. What prompted the move? How are you liking things so far?RP: I moved out here for more opportunity. Boston was an amazing city to cut my teeth in, I met a lot of great people and played for a lot of great crowds, but it doesn't have the same creative energy as LA. I can’t make the same connections in Boston as I can here. I'm currently attending ICON Collective and I'm loving it so far. Being in this city and going to school has given me so much more creative drive than I anticipated.MP: We first met during one of our LAMPING events. What other events and groups have you been introduced to since your move to LA?RP: I've been loving what Space Yacht, Music with Heart, and Free Grilled Cheese have been doing. My favorite event by far has been Bad D.Cisions at the Short Stop in Echo Park. Everyone should check it out for sure.MP: You have an eclectic taste in music. How do you feel your influences have developed over time?RP: I grew up on Classic and Garage Rock, then around 15 or 16 I was introduced to Justice and Daft Punk in High School. From there my tastes exploded in all directions. I rode the Dubstep wave pretty hard. It scratched the same itch for me that riff rock like Rage Against the Machine and the White Stripes did when I was much younger. Today I like to stay eclectic and get inspiration from everywhere. All my creative heroes take influences from a multitude of different sources and I try to emulate that.MP: Growing up on the South Shore of Massachusetts how did you interest in electronic music and production first develop?RP: My initial foray in to the scene started during my Sophomore year of High School with my best friend Nate. We got really frustrated with how boring the school dances were and we wanted to put on something a lot better. I learned to DJ, he ran lights and visuals (he still does, too!) and we put on a school event called Audiophile. It ended up exploding so we moved it to another venue outside of the school and had kids from all over the South Shore coming through. It was a crazy time!MP: Haha, I just watched the Pop and Lockness Monster on Youtube. Please explain.RP: SickAnimation.com has been my go-to “show me something weird on the internet” site since back in the day. Shout out to Marc M.MP: I can stop playing 'Get Your Goat'! How did you develop this concept? Do you think 'goatstep' will take off?RP: This is a funny one, I was doing sound for a short film in college and I had just pulled an all-nighter with my director. The movie took place on a farm so I had this whole library of farm animals to screw around with. I was really burned out and over caffeinated and started screwing with them until Get Your Goat came out. I don’t know if the world is ready for goatstep quite yet but one day it will be.MP: What do you hope to get out of living in LA? What do you hope to share with new audiences and fans that you encounter here?RP: My main goal is to make a career out of making music - I want to see how far I can take my personal project. I hope to give my current and future fans a refreshed perspective on electronic music and maybe remind them of some things that have been forgotten during the rise of EDM.MP: You've sent us a few promos and we've been excited by what we are hearing. Do you have plans for any official releases?RP: I would say check out my soundcloud every once in a while and you might find something cool I’ve been working on. I have some official releases in the works over the next few months but expect to see a ton of me in 2016.MP: Anyone from back east you want to give a shout out to?RP: Definitely brothers Adrian and Aaron, my friends at 1122 and 20 Dodge, and my Duxbury homies. I miss you guys!
