LAMP Weekly Mix #79 feat. Mahalo

Mahalo is a fast rising LA based producer via Hawaii that we are fortunate enough to have on our #weeklymix rotation. This week he delivered a dynamic mix full of his own unreleased material and a few tracks from his friends and collaborators that he has met along the way. We were first introduced to Mahalo at the end of last year and have been excited to see his career begin to blossom including a much anticipated EP release coming out on Sleazy Deep very soon. If you were lucky enough to see him play with our own PZB this past weekend on Boatylicious you're aware of the amazing energy that he brings to all of his performances. Check out the interview with MR PUZL below where he shares a little bit more behind the Mahalo project and his past.MR PUZL: Tell us a little bit about your mix and the tracks you chose. Does this mix reflect how you play live or is it a different process?Mahalo: I tried to get a bunch of unreleased originals into this mix to showcase where I'm headed with future releases and I also tossed in a few of my friends' unreleased tracks. I included three tracks off my upcoming EP on Sleazy Deep which releases later this month. In regards to reflection this is a little more drawn out than how I would play live. I personally am not a fan of recorded mixes that pack as many tracks in as possible. I try to create a vibe that runs fluid vs. changing the track just to appease people with ADD. Save that for the live performance!MP: What we're some of you're earliest musical memories? How did you get into producing electronic music?Mahalo: Well I played in the school band when I was younger but really wasn't feeling that; so in terms of earliest memory that would probably be it. I was turned on to electronic music through my dad who has been a proponent of it for as long as I can remember. It wasn't until I was 13 when I really started to see this as more than just something I wanted to listen to. I started producing on Sony Acid when I was 14 making mash ups and stuff like that. I think the first thing I made was a trance track with the rules of Fight Club plastered on top. It was absolute crap but it was cool for having zero experience or guidance in production. I picked up DJ'ing in 08 with my buddy Matt and once the dance music industry shifted from booking Djs to booking producers that's when I began to focus on taking production seriously.MP: Your name is an expression of thanks and gratitude. How does that reflect you as an individual as well as the music you create?Mahalo: Great question. To go into it in depth would be me basically be giving you an autobiography and I don't think enough people want to hear that so I'll give you the shortened version ;)I grew up in Hawaii on the Big Island, hence where Mahalo comes from, but also went through quite a bit of adversity growing up. I certainly never saw myself being in Los Angeles living the dream I had when I was 15 and making crap music on Sony Acid. It's a miracle to me that everything worked out the way it did and for that I'm thankful and gratuitous for how life has panned out for me. In short, Mahalo is a way of me thanking myself and everyone around me who has helped me get to this point. You all know who you are!!!! I love you all !! <3MP: Can you tell us a little bit about your Hawaiian background. Does any of its culture feed into what you do as an artist?Mahalo: Yeah so I grew up on the Big Island of Hawaii in a small town called Kamuela-Waimea. My family has been out there since the 60's and I have a deep rooted circle of friends and family on the islands. The culture will always and forever be apart of who I am. It certainly carries over into my music and my productions.MP: You released a teaser collab with Drums on Acid a few months ago. What has that experience been like? Can we expect to hear more from you guys?Mahalo: Working with Cary (Drums On Acid) has been an interesting ride and I'm glad to say it's not over yet ;) I met him in 2013 at a party in Glendale that a girl I was dating dragged me to against my wishes. I ended up hitting it off with him and he told me he was the drummer for Infected Mushroom which was always one of my favorite electronic music groups growing up. I didn't believe him and forgot about it all until he sent me his music and reminded me about his new project he was starting called Drums On Acid. Once I heard his music, I was sold and began to mange him. That really set forth a wave of energy within me to work on my own production since I was listening to so many WIP's from Cary. Our collab has taken a very different approach from both of our styles and I'm happy with how it turned out. We'll release it soon... We're just waiting on some things :DMP: What other artists could you see yourself collaborating with at this point in your career?Mahalo: I want to collab with my friends. I have tons of friends making great music and I'd love to work with them and pave our own road.MP: We've casually discussed your plans for Mahalo being more than just about the music you release? Can you elaborate on that for our audience?Mahalo: I have some plans to turn Mahalo into more than just a DJ set. I can't elaborate too much but live music is the future. That's all I can say right now :)MP: What have you got in store for the coming months that you can share with us (new music, gigs, etc.)Mahalo: Well I have my first EP releasing on Sleazy Deep very soon. I also have a single coming out on Tommie Sunshine's label Brooklyn Fire titled "Mulholland Drive" which I threw in this mix. This 4th of July I'm playing a boat party down in Long Beach with Louis Futon and JackLNDN. Should be a good month!MP: Any shout out you want to give to your crew, friends and family?Mahalo: A HUGE shoutout to Alex and Josh from LAMP for the mix and hospitality. A big shoutout to Drums On Acid, Markquis AM138, and SIRENS - love you guys!
