LAMP Weekly Mix #76 feat. Durante
LAMP Weekly Mix #76 feat. Durante
Last week we got a treat in our inbox when Durante shot us over his final draft for our #weeklymix series. This young producer is quickly making a name for himself with phenomenal remixes and original works that bend the facets of deep house, with technical compositions and complex soundscape. MR PUZL got a chance to talk with Durante about his mix and his journey to date. Check out the full interview and tracklist below:MR PUZL: Tell us a little bit about your mix and the tracks you choose.Durante: Recently I had the pleasure of playing some music outdoors with some really amazing scenery. Namely the LAMP parties, & Form Festival @ Arcosanti. This mix is an homage to those events, & mixing natural elements with house & techno.MP: You have a complex and sophisticated production style. How do you go about developing the early stages of your tracks?D: Thank you! Usually I just start by grabbing samples/sounds that really catch me off guard. Whether it’s percussion or synths, I’ll just pull anything that’s unique & has an interesting character to it. I think those always carry the track all the way through to the finished product.MP: What music background or education do you have? Any relation to Jimmy Durante?D: I started taking piano lessons at age 6. Every week I’d have new classical pieces to learn & practice. I hated practicing, so I’d come up with my own versions & improvisations to the compositions. I’d be so natural with my own versions, that when I went back to my teacher & play her the song she assigned me, I’d end up playing them how I practiced them. She’d scold me and tell me I’m not playing the songs correctly but to be honest I always liked my own versions more.. Also, no relation to Jimmy Durante haha (his last name is actually pronounced differently than mine)MP: Your Tumblr (http://stack.durantemakesmusic.com/) has some fantastic visual posts. How do other creative mediums impact your productions?D: I appreciate that. I’m a huge fan of visual art as well as music, & I love sharing the art I find with others. Music is just one piece of the entire artistic vision. It’s one element of many that all come together to create a bigger picture. I feel my music definitely has an impact on the visual art I make/post & vice versa, but exactly how they impact eachother, I can’t really say.MP: Back in late may you played an event called 'Form' in Arcosanti. Can you describe the experience of playing at a place like that?D: In short, no. Form is such an incredible & organic festival that I don’t think any collection of words attempting to describe it would do it any justice. Form was an absolute honor to play. I shared the lineup with many amazing artists and people I look up to for inspiration. Massive thank you to Hundred Waters for having me.MP: What other non-traditional venues have you played at or would like to play at in the future?D: The LAMP parties were extremely fun, I hope to play at more in the future. I really enjoy playing in natural environments, & places where people can lose themselves to the music without feeling judged by others.MP: OWSLA is a label that continues to diversify its sound and collective of artists. How did your relationship with them begin?D: I started working for OWSLA as an intern in Florida when I was going to school in Gainesville. After about a year I was hired to work full time in LA. This meant I had to drop out of school, but it was a risk I was willing to take. On a similar note, I just recently left working for the label to pursue my own musical endeavors full time. I’m very excited for the future to say the least!MP: What was it about the label that helped your sound evolve?D: I think being around likeminded people who truly love music was really solid for my growth.MP: What other labels or collectives would you like to work with in the future?D: Don’t want to predetermine anything, but I love everything Get Physical and Innervisions puts out. Not necessarily that my music fits with those labels, but they’re definitely labels I look to for inspiration.MP: What can you share with us about upcoming releases or collaborations?D: Can’t say much, but I can say that I’m extremely excited about the new music I have coming out. :)
