LAMP Weekly Mix #72 feat. Plastic Plates

Over the past few years as our brand has grown we've had the very fortune opportunity to work with and host some exceptionally talented artists at our events and the Weekly Mix series has become an extension of that idea. This week we were graciously given the opportunity to release a mix from a guest that we hold in the highest regard as a musician, a producer and of course a DJ, PLASTIC PLATES. Please enjoy the mix and also have a read through a short little interview he kindly gave to MR PUZL below.MR PUZL: Tell us a little bit about your mix. Why did you choose these particular tracks?PLASTIC PLATES: Because they're great! If you've heard me DJ in the past weeks you would have heard me play these tunes.MP: You've spent quite a lot of time here in the US. Did you ever imagine growing up that you'd be living abroad?PP: My mum and her side of the family are from the U.S. and many people in my life growing up were from all over the world so I guess, yes. Oh yeah, and I'm an American citizen.MP: What drew you to New York originally, and why did you choose to make it your current home?PP: Originally when I was a teenager I wanted to come and make it as a jazz musician. This is my second stint here, I moved here this time to be with my lady.MP: Being involved in bands earlier on in your career, you had the opportunity to work hands on with a variety of artists. How do those interactions and experiences cross over into your work as Plastic Plates?PP: I've done all manner of things from playing TV, arenas, small clubs, recording in famous studios, home studios. I guess I'm adaptable, prepared for anything and any place.MP: You mentioned in the past that you enjoy touring or traveling to gigs on your own because you get to meet more people that way. Is there anyone you have encountered on your trips that has made an impact on you or your music?PP: It's nice to do gigs with other DJs and witness them doing their thing in person but it's more a personal thing, I've made lots of great friends in the process. Special mention to my Mexicano amigos.MP: Jazz drumming was an important component of your musical past and clearly resonates in the present. What was it specifically about the drums you gravitated to more than other jazz instruments?PP: My Dad is a professional drummer and percussionist...MP: Disco is one of a few recurring genres in your productions. What other styles and cultures of music do you draw inspiration from? How have those evolved over your years as a producer and DJ?PP: I don't know about genres, I can't keep up and I'm not sure what they mean most of the time. For instance, what is tropical house? Is it house music with Soca or Cumbia for example or house music with Hawaiian shirts, pineapples and palm trees?I like drums, bass lines, chord changes and melody. Sometimes a remix calls for something harmonically interesting, sometimes not. Sometimes a DJ set calls for club music, sometimes not. I've played straight ahead experimental modern jazz, old new school pop music, Afro Cuban music, funk soul music, electronic for example. I guess somehow that ends up in there in some form or another but maybe not all at once.MP: It's no secret that Australia continuously produces amazing talent in all genres of music. What artists and bands were some of your earliest influences from there?PP: Obviously my old man's jazz classical and studio career has had a big influence. My uncle produced INXS' first record. I've known Kim from the Presets since 1995. That's the abbreviated version but gives you a good idea.MP: We read that you spent a lot of time in the Sydney opera house and got up to some mischief. If given the opportunity would you ever consider conducting your own orchestra?PP: I'm most definitely not qualified for that job but I could conduct a string or brass ensemble in the studio for sure.
