LAMP Weekly Mix #64 feat. Colour Vision (SXSW Mix)

This week we're bringing some tropical vibes as Colour Vision delivers a feel good mix fresh off his trip to Austin for SXSW. Inspired by all of the incredible experiences he had there, we're privy to a host of amazing tracks and a few of his very own. Reflecting on the mix, Colour Vision muses, "This specific mix for LAMP really represents my trip to SXSW.. it includes a lot of demo tracks and music from my label in creation at the moment.. music from friends I saw in Austin and an intro that I recorded at the airport the day I left."MR PUZL also got the opportunity to speak with Colour Vision upon his return from Austin.MR PUZL: We’re speaking with your after a whirlwind trip to SXSW and performing at Beautiful Buzz’s TBD Festival. Tell us about the experience!COLOUR VISION: I think i had the best time out of anyone at the party getting hang with DJ/internet friends from all over & see some of my favorite Artists perform in an intimate environment! My set was a BLAST as well..i was able to test out some unreleased tracks and ended up getting a ton of hi fives from some legends that were there. I ruined a pair of boots in the rain, ended up at a weird lazer tag after party (where i dominated) with Ardalan from DirtyBird + ate TEX MEX/ BBQ/ STEAKHOUSE so i really covered my bases on the authentic #austin experience. Huge respect to Erin & Christine from Beautiful Buzzz & the TBD FEST crew for having me out and putting out such an epic showcase!MP: Growing up in San Diego what were some of your earliest influences in music as a whole? What was the first disco track you ever bought?CV: My earliest musical experiences in San Diego involved a lot of indie electronic + hardcore shows at SOMA San Diego and sweaty INDIE DANCE/ 80's dance clubs in LA + TIJUANA. I was fortunate enough to learn & play along some of the raddest DJs in town (Gabe Vega + Adam Salter) at the very start of my DJ career & it really opened my eyes to Disco + 90's House sounds that you can still hear when i step into in the booth. I think the first 'Disco' track i owned came on a funk compilation and it was Chic's 'Le Freak' but was listening to lots of 80's new wave music that my mom was always blasting growing up. MP: As well as DJing and producing you’re also a full time Graphic Designer. How do you see these two creative worlds co-existing in your everyday life? Does their relationship to each other reciprocate inspiration?CV: I think that being a designer has really helped balance the music while also adding a new perspective and dimension to the sounds. The techniques i use in programs like photoshop translate directly to production DAWS like LOGIC and when i hit a creative rut in one the other comes easier which is really helpful. Creative types should know what i mean by that. It's also made me hyper critical of my work and work done for me which i think has really helped in the quality control department lately.MP: What does Colour Vision mean to you? Why the British spelling of the word color?CV: COLOUR VISION was a name out of maybe 20 that i pitched to a prior management when i decided to start taking my DJing serious.. As a joke i used to DJ under the name 'DANCE PARTY CENTRAL' and i decided to pick something that i could take a little more serious as an artist, yet fun. Although it didn't mean much in the beginning I've found a lot of meaning in the words and to me it really represents the creative process from making a sound and then exporting to DJ programs like Serato that use spectral analyzers to color code the frequencies.. the moment that you can actually SEE a sound is my favorite part of making music right now.. it's become a really interesting new form of art to me that plays into my design focused mind. The 'colour' spelling actually came from my love of Aussie nu disco and some of my friends living there primarily used that spelling and i slipped it in. MP: How have you seen the Tropical genre evolve over the last several years? What are the similarities and differences you find in Disco and Tropical formats?CV: I've seen it go in full circle from 80's pop, new wave, tropical disco, tropical pop, moombahton, tropical deep house, tropical tech house, tropical post dubstep, tropical future beat,, tropical nu disco, tropical pop, tropical house.. every one has their sound.. from indie to commercial. I could talk all day about the subject but instead of putting a negative spin on a wonderful interview i'd like to say that i'm really excited to see what some of my favorite artists will be putting out and contributing to the growth of the movement and the sound.MP: We often discuss the idea of taking people on a journey during live sets as well as mixes, and obviously playing to a crowd is important. How do you curate your sounds to reflect a certain mood or direction you’re trying to go in?CV: To me the Journey is incredibly important whether in a live setting or mixtape. I personally love to start slow and build the tension and energy throughout the mix. A general swell of tempo and vibe always translates to a happy dance floor and even to a solo car party.. i want to be able to paint a large picture of myself and the music i love from slow indie tunes to real banging deep sounds that i bring to my club sets.. everything has its place and time and i enjoy that freedom in my work. I generally tailor everything towards the crowd/party/blog/mood for instance.. the Degrade.LA mix was for the colour ORANGE which i really latched onto.. throughout the entire mix i repeat the orange motif in the lyrics and the mood of the songs.. it represents sunshine, fire, burning desire. My latest mix for the WELL which was bit different was me dealing with a lot of emotions that i had about a recent break up and every song from the beginning to the end was hand picked because of certain lyrics.. it tells a story from beginning to end and whether or not people notice that or not it was very important to ME that i worked through those via my music. Every mix is important to me in some way.MP: Top 5 favorite old school disco tracks? Top 5 Nu Disco tracks? PIONALFLUME X WKND - HYPER PARADISEMP: At the moment who would be your favorite DJ to go B2B with and where? CV: At the moment i think it would be super epic to go B2B with a bunch of the PARADISE ULTD. crew tropical team including BOYS GET HURT, EAU CLAIRE, DWYR, WATER FACE on WORLD TOUR (working on that).MP: The ‘rise’ or rather the awareness of collectives in our industry has been a popular topic of late amongst the media. How has your relationship with degrade.LA and other groups benefited your career so far?CV: The degrade.LA crew and i came together in a really organic way. I'm a very 'do it yourself' kind of guy and generally resist working with others but they have a clear vision and focus of what they're looking to do in the industry and was on board without question after recognizing their passion for the project. They've been super supportive of my diversity and style as well as just being stand up friends that are there to bounce ideas off of chat about industry STUFF. Im excited to see what kind of trouble we can get into this year collectively. I've also been developing the PARADISE ULTD. crew which really just consists of me and friends from around the world exchanging ideas, remixes, tracks & support.. i think the collective mentality is extremely helpful and motivating in the current climate where artists can rely on each other rather than larger entities that don't quite GET IT.MP: We were really stoked when you release ‘Sur Chic’ last year. You’ve now gone on to sign with with a management company in Australia. What do you have in store leading up to this summer and the rest of 2015?CV: With the new MGMT, releases are my top priority this year.. The follow up to SUR CHIC which is 'HAUS PARTY' is coming out with a remix package next month via ON THE FRUIT recordings [FR] and i have nearly 6 remixes that are finished for various labels throughout the world waiting on deck for release. I'm currently working on multiple collaboration tunes, some new remixers for larger commercial labels and an EP that will more 'Indie Pop' focused that should feature me on vocals throughout (if i don't chicken out) .. i'm extremely excited to share all of it!
