LAMP Weekly Mix #168 feat. Peace In Noise

LAMP Weekly Mix #168 feat. Peace In Noise

Peace in Noise is the Los Angeles DJ Duo Dersu Rhodes and Kenneth Paltrow. At the end of last year we had the opportunity to meet these amazing gentleman and host them at our stage during Pismocean Festival. It was safe to say that we immediately had quite a few musical commonalities. This week we are very happy to have them join our guest series and have thoroughly enjoyed the mix they prepared for us. As well as being a performing duo, Peace in Noise acts as a collective and produces a variety of events in West LA, Santa Monica, and Venice including their charity series called NightCause which raises money for a charity of their headliner’s choosing. PZB had a chance to ask them about that and a few other fun things they have coming up. You will find the interview and the complete track list below.PZB: Welcome to the mix series guys. We are really happy to have you take the reigns this week. I had the opportunity to take a listen to the mix yesterday and it is fantastic. Can you tell our listeners a little about what you have in store for them this week?Peace in Noise:Thanks for having us! Our music selection often pulls from a number of different genres, sampling sounds from old and new pieces of work and layering in our own touches. This particular mix focuses on the coming of spring. The weather is warming up, the spring bloom is upon us and we hope this will be your soundtrack.PZB: Having our roots on Los Angeles’ west side I was familiar with the Venice duo but my first exposure to Peace In Noise was at last years Pismocean Festival. We had the pleasure of hosting you on our LAMP stage that weekend and we got a chance to see first hand what your project is all about. For many people listening this will be their first exposure to your project. How would explain Peace In Noise to someone who is discovering your music for the first time?Peace in Noise:Peace In Noise is a DJ duo who approaches a love for house/techno/electronic music in two different directions. Dersu gained his love for the craft when he lived in Berlin for a year. His approach to DJing is very deep and etherial. Kenny grew up around New York and was introduced to the scene at a young age. His approach to the art is routed in the funkier and more organic variety. When you combine the two, our sets take on this "sweet and salty" flow that is quite unique. PZB: Tell us about little bit about your musical roots. What brought you two together and how long have you guys been sharing your love of music with world as Peace In Noise?Peace in Noise:We met through mutual friends years ago, Kenny was living in San Francisco and Dersu in San Diego. We had this group of friend that lived between SF, SD and LA and we would meet for festivals and weekenders. It was not until we both moved to LA and attended Burning Man together for the first time that we found our music selection really complimented the others in a great way. PZB: Listening through your mix I came across a wonderful remix of “Everything In Its Right Place” from Radiohead. These guys are one of my all-time favorite bands and a place I draw huge inspiration from. Who are some of the artists that you draw inspiration from?Peace in Noise:As a duo we have lots of inspirations. On the more organic and band based side of things, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Talking Heads, David Bowie and LCD Soundsystem would be some of our favorites. When it comes to electronic music producers, creations from Lee Burridge and the All Day I Dream label, Berlin based labels like Kattermuke with producers including Nico Stojan, Acid Pauli or creations from Scandinavian producers like Crussen or Be Svendson are a mix of our inspirations.PZB: One area of the music world where your style seems to have really taken hold is the Burning Man community. I have listened to sets of yours from the Pink Mammoth camp and seen your name posted as a performer for a bunch of other camps and art cars. What is it about the burn that draws you there? Peace in Noise:Everything about Burning Man draws us there! The place lets us feel like kids again. We get to check our wallets, keys and worries at the gate and ride a bike everywhere we go. I think what keeps us going back though is tapping into a place that makes you realize what the creative human spirit is capable of. We have been a number of times and we are wowed again and again by something different every time we attend.PZB: Can you share with us a moment from one of your past Burns that was really special for you both?Peace in Noise:This past Burn one of the biggest art pieces was called the Catacomb of Veils. It was a huge piece which looked like the great pyramids of Egypt. The festival decided to burn this at sunrise. We were lucky enough to play an art car for this experience. We played a two hour set that started in camp before sunrise on an eery morning. We slowly made our way out to the burn site and play an epic set to the burning of this structor as we welcomed in the rising sun. A very special morning indeed.PZB: Recently you both started a new night at the Townhouse in Venice. It is not just any night though. “Nightcause” is a very successful new Thursday night dance for charity event that you have started. Tell us a little bit about that and how it began and what we can expect going forward with that project.Peace in Noise:We are very excited about this monthly. NightCause is the brain child of Jenna Anton, Kelsey Madsen and the two of us. It happens the first Thursday of each month. The project aims to accomplish two things; bringing great electronic music acts on a monthly basis to the West Side of LA and creating a place where attendees can feel good about giving back in a small way to our world. Each month we will host a new headlining DJ and each month this DJ picks a charity they would like to donate all of the door proceeds to. Past months have included Hoj, Marques Wyatt and Lonely Boy. More importantly proceeds have been donated to Standing Rock, families of the victims from the Oakland warehouse fire and Karma Animal Rescue. In coming months we will host talent from all over the US, Europe and South America. Find out more on our NightCause Facebook page and come dance for a cause! PZB: It has been a long and rainy winter that we badly needed here in LA. People here are finally starting to come out of hibernation and getting ready to party!! For all your fans old and new, what can you tell us in terms of upcoming gigs and new music we can expect for this spring and summer?Peace in Noise:We focus our events on the West Side of LA. You can expect a great night each first Thursday of every month at Townhouse in Venice. We also have a few pool parties and open air events in store for this summer. Keep up with us on our Peace in Noise Facebook page and thanks for listening.
