LAMP Weekly Mix #141 feat. CLAAP & Santana: Part II - California
This week our beautiful friends from Paris return to our series to deliver Part II of their summer mixtape concept. Part I aka 'Californie' featured some of the early summer vibes that you'd find while sitting at the beach sipping a delicious cocktail. The second and final edition entitled 'California' has a more dynamic range of music styles, focusing on the uptempo energy of an afternoon pool party.MR PUZL: Welcome back! This is the first time we’ve done a 2 part mix with a guest, and we really enjoyed the first installment. You’ve selected a dynamic range music and the mix has a great ebb and flow to it. What have you got in store for us this week?Santana: Thanks, we're glad to be back!CLAAP: This is the dual mix of the first one which was very laidback. This one is eclectic too but has higher energy.S: We tried to imagine what would be a fun mix for a late summer LA pool party - or something like that.C: We started with an acapella chorus from our song "Flash" and finished by the full version of the same song. BPM's range from 58.5 to 127, there's quite a lot of good disco and happy house in there.S: We also mixed in a few tracks by us, a remix we did for our very good friend and talented CätCät earlier this year, and lots of recent stuff from our label Exploited (such as the killer "I Need You" from our parisian friend Onsra) as well as other stuff from Gomma, Suara and more...C: We also included Kanye West's "Fade" ; we love the producing and how it sounds. There's a little bit of acid too through James Curd awesome "Vertigo" and of course through our "Release Your Body To The Best" vinyl with Mike Simonetti - charted in Resident Advisor's top 50 for april 2016, sold out and about to be repressed.MP: I can’t get enough of this Sammy Banana’s tune ‘BLO’ with the piano chords powering through as the sax solo comes in and out of the breakdown. The B-side is also a gem! Fool’s Gold really represents a wide range of musical styles but always release music that have a certain catchy groove to them. What other labels do you feel epitomize this style?C: I think Exploited Records totally matches this description. There's so much good, diverse stuff released on this awesome label, it's mind blowing.S: Shootout to Shir Khan, the label owner, who isn't afraid to take risks and release unconventional stuff such as ours!MP: Shortly after we featured your first mix you released a wonderful music video to accompany your single ‘Jaques’ that came out on Exploited. There’s a lot of interesting imagery juxtaposed with a POV style photography in the film. Apart from the music itself what inspired the style and vision for the video? S: Our dear friend Polina Rabtseva shot the video and CLAAP! edited it. She's a super talented belarusian photographer and videographer who lives in LA, she specialises in sensual / erotic pictures.C: She spent a few days with us in Cap Ferret, France. The place, the people and the moments we shared there were so beautiful she shot the whole thing. So basically, it's like a holiday video following real life friends on a perfect day in a perfect place.S: Most of the time we wouldn't know she was shooting, but then sometimes she would be directing, like "Santana, please get on this stone and dance" Haha!MP: Since your last visit to LA you’ve been really busy with a ton of projects. Tell us a bit about some forthcoming releases and any forthcoming gigs you’ve got.S: We have a live concert coming up in a beautiful winery from the south of France, so i'm gonna sing in the middle of vines and i'm super excited!C: I'll be playing Homerun party at Fogas Ház in Budapest on oct, 7th. In the meantime, we also have a few DJ sets in Paris of course and then we should be back in the US around Halloween so expect to hear us in LA soon.S: CLAAP! just finished a dub/tropical remix of Yuksek's "Sweet Addiction", out soon with a bunch of other remixes and he also did a very cool, minimal remix for our parisian friends Ma/Ji.C: I played it for the first time at the awesome festival Decks on the Beach in Beirut last week and people loved it so i cannot wait for it to be released. Right now i'm finishing a remix of LA based artist and good friend Birdee's super catchy disco hit "Unreal".S: We're also putting the final touch to a new original track soon to be released on Partyfine's upcoming compilation.C: In the collaborations department, we're writing and recording vocals with french producer Feadz, there's some really great stuff coming up... MP: That's exciting that you’re working on a live show together! What inspired this concept and why did you choose to host it in a winery? What can people expect to hear during your set?S: We've always wanted to do a live show but we have so many projects at the same time it's been hard to find enough time to do so. Then our friends from Le Pic Saint Loup, a very nice restaurant in a very beautiful countryside area, told us they wanted to throw a party in a local winery with a live concert and DJs so they asked us if we wanted to DJ there. We said yes but then we got thinking about the live concert part, in the middle of vines, beautiful magical place, etc. So we suggested to do both the concert and a DJ set.C: And here we are! We're super excited. We're going to play a bunch of released and unreleased songs adapted for live performance with a twist of afro vibes.MP: Both of you have your hands in a variety of creative projects. We’ve heard that Santana just returned from Benin with some prototypes for a new clothing line. Can you share some more about this concept?S: I'm working on an afro-inspired line of clothing. Shirts, trousers, dresses made of wax fabric with a modern cut. I'm also working with designers to print my own original patterns on fabric. It's very exciting!MP: I heard you’re taking a much needed vacation in October to Ibiza and you’re staying in a more relaxed part of the island. What is your favorite way to unwind while down there?C: You're well informed!S: We just chill and disconnect, layin in the sun, go to the beach, eat at small, typical fish restaurants - or tapas, drink wine, etc. Very relaxed ambiance!MP: So we’re not alone in our frustration with Apple’s latest update to the iPhone 7, right?C: OMG, don't get me started. Please someone start the new Apple company! There must be some rich dude who sold his company for a couple billion that could invest some of it to develop a cool phone with user experience in mind instead of economic shit and board interests. Please!
