LAMP Weekly Mix #140 feat. ANEK

This week we're featuring Danish duo ANEK who've just come off of a stellar summer at Sankeys's in Ibiza as the resident of the VIVa MUSiC Warrior's night. Nurtured and guided by the legend and Viva label boss DJ Steve Lawler, the two childhood friends have gone from strength to strength with each release and get crowds up and off their feet wherever they play. They're on a whirlwind run of shows and travel constantly so it was even cooler that they took time out of their schedule to produce this mixtape for us. MR PUZL got the chance to ask them a bit about their time on the island and how it's evolved from their first visit to current day as well as some of their favorite moments from the summer.MR PUZL: Denise and Karina, welcome to the LAMP Guest series! There are a lot of delightful flavors in this mix. Tell us a bit about the tracks you chose and the vibe behind the mixtape.ANEK: Thank you for having us! In this mix we wanted to reflect the vibe and style that we would actually play on a night out in a club. We always do our best to keep it fresh searching for new tracks and promos every week, so theres a lot of upcoming and unreleased stuff on this mix including some of our own tracks.MP: You’ve had a busy summer and just finished up another residency at Warriors this past weekend. Tell us about that experience, and some of your favorite moments from the summer.Yes it's been amazing, it was the 5th VIVa Warriors season at Sankeys Ibiza and it has been the busiest and best yet in our opinion :) The crowd at these parties just gets better and better each year. We are very grateful to be a part of it.Favourite moment was probably last Sunday closing "The Lab" after Mathew Johnson. We closed the room at 6.30, but could have continued many hours more. The vibe was so amazing and room was packed until the end.MP: Over the years, since your first trip in 2001, you’ve seen Ibiza develop, grow and manifest with new, evolving music, shifting club ownership, and other socio economic factors. What are somethings that you feel have helped to sustain the culture there? Is there anything you hope to see improve or develop further in the future on the island?zA: Of course the island has changed the last 15 years. People on the island always say each year that it's for the worse but we think it's just a natural evolution and you just got to embrace it. What has helped sustain the culture on the island is definitely the people who come year after year with a love for the music and the clubbing culture. We hope that people there and newcomers get more aware of that when we are on the island we are all like a family who has to take care of the island and each other.MP: If you had friends visiting you there and had a whole day and night to explore the island, where would you take them?A: We would take them to a nice beach, and there are so many to choose from. We recently went to one not too far from San An, the waters were crystal clear and blue. We often end up same places for lunch, La Paloma, - up north the island. The food here is amazing and they grow there own vegetables. We also often go to 'Passion Cafe', we have been going there since the owner opened the first small one in Playa D'en Bossa, she has now expanded to many all over the island. Our friends always love it there (but we have very health conscious friends haha) nothing better than refuelling with good stuff and juices. After we would go by a car exploring the island and watch the sunset from view point in front of Es Vedra. If we had more days, renting a boat sailing the shores of Ibiza or to Formentera having lunch and just chilling on the boat all day, is the best when the island is crowded. Then later we would probably find a nice place in Ibiza town for dinner or Talamanca, Sa Punta for example and then head for a drink and then to the club until the early hours. Perfect day and night in our opinion.MP: You had an interview back in 2014 talking about some producers that you were really into at the time, specifically, Christian Nielsen. We had the pleasure of featuring him a little while back, and it’s been exiting to see his recognition for his music grow! Who are some upcoming artists that have made their way on to your sets this year?A: It's cool to watch fellow artists grow and we love to support producers we like! This year we have really noticed Pawsa, Michael Bibi and the Solid Grooves crew who we recently played for in Ibiza. They are all super talented and have a great sound and last they are really nice people. We are excited to see where they will be at in the future, definitely keep an eye and ear out for them! We have also been playing a lot of tracks from the guys from Gruuv.elements and Mirco Caruso.MP: Your bio states that you currently reside in the UK & France. How do you go about working on new music? Do you wait to meet up and get in a studio together or do ideas stem from shared projects via digital tools and internet connections?A: People always ask us this question, but yes with internet today, and sending projects to each other (we work in Logic ProX) It couldn't be any easier. We are in contact everyday and send new projects back and forth. It works really well for us like this. We do also travel quite a bit back and forth between UK and Paris, so we also get the chance to work together once in a while.MP: Congrats on your latest release ‘Open Mind’ on Kenja Records. I’m not familiar with the imprint ,but see you’re in good company with the likes of Raffa FL, ItaloBros, Di Chiara Brothers and Rich Wakley on this VA compilation. Tell us how you got involved with them and the inspiration behind the track.A: Thank you so much :) It's a really cool VA, and we have been playing quite a few of the tracks on the comp. We have been supporting quite a few tracks from the label in the past, and got in contact with Ronnie Spiteri. If you haven't heard his tracks before, check them out, this guy is on fire.MP: You’re part of something very special over at Viva, and we are massive fans of what Steve Lawler is doing and has accomplished for house music. Having a support network and a mentor like Steve must be amazing. Do you get the opportunity to pass on the proverbial torch and teach/educate some of the newer artists in the industry?A: We wouldn't say that we teach anyone but we always like to share any of our experience and opinion with newer artists we meet along the way. We are not Steve Lawler haha but have been in the business for 15 years so know how it is working hard for your dreams.MP: Things like mental fortitude, patience, the pursuit of one’s goals, and passion for the work you are creating are core pieces of advice for any aspiring producer. What are some nuances and personal obstacles that you had to overcome that we’re simply just not foreseeable?A: Hmm that's a difficult one. We try always to find the blessing in disguise when meeting obstacles ;) With this industry, like with any other industry, things don't always go your way. We tend not to dwell on these things as just a waste of time :) MP: We’ve seen some past event dates in your calendar that have taken you here to the US. Have you been to Los Angeles before? If you could bring 2 other DJs with you on a trip to LA for a show who would you choose?A: We recently played in New York and Miami but have never been to LA, it's a dream of ours! Uhh there are so many great DJs! Probably Matthias Tanzmann as we love his music and he is super nice. Then Martinez Brothers, do they count as one Dj? HahaEnjoy,LAMP
