LAMP Weekly Mix #138 feat. DeMarzo
Keeping up the amazing string of guest mixes for LAMP this week is the UK producer DeMarzo. He's an artist who is pioneering sound and influencing dance floors like few others have in the past few years. He delivered a fantastic mix for us that we know you will enjoy. From his early years as a student at the Yamaha Keyboard School to nights studying Jazz improv, DeMarzo's trajectory was already set at highly progressive angle. His work continues to grow from strength to strength with each release and some of the industry's biggest labels such as Hot Creations, Material, Noir, 303 Lovers, Glasgow Underground, 2DIY4, Nurvous and many many more. This is an impressive list but deservedly earned through all of Marcus' hard work, attention to detail and ultimately dedication and love of music. Check out his interview with MR PUZL below as they chat about some of his new unreleased music, forthcoming trip to Ibiza and his love for London.MR PUZL: Marcus, thanks so much for joining our weekly mix series! It's safe to say we at LAMP are massive fans of your work. Our guests always seem to make an effort to paint a particular narrative for our listeners with their mix. What inspired yours?DeMarzo: Thanks for the kind words, pleasure to be apart of it. Erm well this particular mix was made with a lot of new promo’s and un released stuff from me, it was an opportunity to get out some new stuff for people to hear. I try keep everything grooving, but a podcast has a different feel usually than how I play live but I hope this gives people an idea what I’m about.MP: You've featured a load of new tracks in this mix tape, including one called 007 Edit. Can you tell us a bit about these and when we might see official releases?DM: This track was made purely for live shows so there will be no official release :(. I like to keep things fresh live. One thing iv always hated is when Dj’s play tunes over and over that everyone’s heard. If I see a dj, I like to hear music I’ve never heard. Edits and live tracks are a great way to offer this to the clubbers.MP: Robert Hood is a legend, and his early work with Jeff Mills was so important in helping to progress electronic music in the early 90s. What other artists either of that era or now do you feel are pushing the boundaries and creating a positive environment for house music scene?DM: Absolutely, and I’m always looking out for guys who are doing something different. There’s a lot of ‘samey’ music out at the minute, everyone trying to do the same thing so when you heard something new It’s a buzz. Rex The Dog is making some nice stuff. Huge fan of Nick Curly’s sets and the stuff released on 8bit.MP: You moved to London at the end of 2014 from Leeds and it's clearly had an amazing impact on your work. Do you feel like this will be home for a while or are you always looking for a new adventure?DM: London is great, couldn’t imagine living anywhere else at the moment, so this is certainly my home for a while. There’s a lot of energy here and living back near Leeds eventually got boring. Being in all day working, its nice to know if you step out the front door there’s lots to do. Huge fan of Barcelona and Berlin but not sure if I’d move there. Living here has definitely impacted my music, there’s more music to take in for inspiration and like I said the energy off the city rubs off of you.MP: Do you get the chance to head back to Leeds to perform? What's the first thing you do when you're home?DM: I’ve not played often recently in Leeds, but the first thing I do when I get home is give my dog a big hug. Always amazing family time when I head back so its mainly just relaxing.MP: You've been to Brazil quite a few times, and there's a really great house and techno following there. Who are some artists you're following from there and other South American countries that fans in the States and Europe should know about?DM: This will be my 10th time in Brazil this weekend and its always great to go back. Brazil is FULL of great artists, one of my favourite Live acts was Flow and Zeo, they play a great blend of grooving house and tech. Gromma is a guy over there who started out as one of the best warm up DJs in Brazil, now he’s up there as one of the best. DJ Glen is also a fantastic producer, his music has crazy grooves.MP: You made your Ibiza debut in July of last year. How was that experience and where did you end up playing? Any good late night / early morning stories?DM: It was at Savannah’s on the sunset strip, its always a great vibe down there. It’s a small venue but as usually in Ibiza, things are never too chilled haha. I remember little of it...MP: We hear you're headed back in September for a few weeks. Can you tell us a bit aboutthe forthcoming trip? If you could curate a night/morning on the island, where would you have the event and who'd play?DM: A month ago I was DJing for Elrow at Space, which was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. The next one is at Eden for Faction and I’ve heard the party has been a huge success over the season so really excited for it. My own night??... hmm... Actually years ago I went to a party on Cala Gacio beach and it was so cool. I’d have it there. Dj’s would be Erol Alkan, Shonky, Nick Curly. There loads I like but these have left a big impression on me when I've seen them.MP: Do you produce on the road or usually wait till you back at your home studio? What's your setup like? Do you take any gear with you on the road in the of chance you feel inspired to write a new tune?DM: The only thing I tend to do on the road is finish a track that I want to play later or Edit something. There’s some tracks I love that just don’t drop how I’d like or have the right amount of energy so I tend edit some tracks I like to fit them in my sets.MP: You've just started a new radio show on Bloop called 'Pusher'. Can you tell us a bit more about your plans with this?DM: This is a way to get more of my sets out there. I’m being sent so much good music and I’m busy as hell in the studio, so want to keep my fans as updated as frequently as possible. Releases this year for me are exciting with Elrow, Viva, Roush, WOW, Suah. You’ll hear all these in my Pusher mixes.
