LAMP Weekly Mix #126 feat. Julius Jetson

Straight out of the DMV, we've got G House aficionado Julius Jetson on the rotation this week as our featured Guest. Named as one of the top 10 DJs to watch this year by Complex, we we're extremely excited and honored to have him on our series. His music has graced a plethora of popular blogs and media site, tracked and charted heavily on HypeM, and been supported by some of the biggest names in the industry. The most impressive part we've come to learn is that he's achieved his production success and grown his skill incredibly quickly over just 3 short years. His east coast influences shine through his productions and definitely give him a recognizable style and energy that makes it hard to keep your head from nodding. His latest track 'Came to Get It' is a big, bass-laden rendition of Joe Buddens's shake 'Pump It Up' setting this talented producer up for an exciting summer.MR PUZL: It's a real treat to have another east coast native on the series this year. What have you got cued up for our listeners in your mix?Julius Jetson: The pleasure is all mine! In this mix, you'll find some of my favorite gangsta house records from around the world. I included artists such as Doozie, Templeton, Juany Bravo, and Bijou (just to name a few). With this mix, I want to take the listener on a journey. I hope everyone enjoys!MP: Growing up in DC what were some of your earliest music influences? How did you get into producing electronic music? Do you have any formal music training?JJ: I was always a huge hip hop head. I actually didn’t listen to anything else until my sophomore year of high school Growing up, my favorite rappers in DC were Wale, Tabi Bonney and X.O. However, my favorite album out of the DMV was "Diamond in the Rough" by Diamond District. They only had one album, but it was an instant classic in my eyes.I actually made the transition from being a DJ to Producer in 2013. I was hanging out with Imad Royal and he was showing me all his unfinished projects and was talking passionately about the idea’s that inspired them. I was blown away. I spent my junior/senior year of college learning production and music theory. Every free moment I had, I was making music. Most of it wasn’t good but hey, you gotta start somewhere. I actually have no formal training. Everything I know has been self taught.MP: The city has been on the forefront of alternative styles of music with acts like Bad Brains, Fugazi, Thievery Corporation, and MCs like Wale and rising star Phillipe Prosper all making a lasting mark. How does the local electronic scene play into this narrative?JJ: The local scene in Washington, D.C is fantastic! There are so many talented producers from the area (Manila Killa, Eau Claire, Kids Want Techno, and Indiginis). We’re all supportive of each other and help motivate one another to keep going. We have wonderful production companies that foster this talent (Shout out Nu Androids, Closed Sessions, U Street Music Hall and Flash).MP: In your bio you've listed some awesome producers like Maceo Plex and Shiba San as your inspiration. At the other end of the spectrum who are some artists that your seeing come up through the ranks that are making an impact on you?JJ: Everything Mahalo is doing right now blows me away. Bijou keeps cranking out quality gangsta house. N2N out in New York is another guy who I take notes from. Ronzel from San Diego. Anytime I hear a new track from one of these producers, I am instantly motivated to work harder.MP: Hip-hop is a component to your productions and the style of house that you are currently focused on. Besides house and hip-hop, what other genres have influenced your music?JJ: I actually use a lot of blues scales to write tracks. I’ve always wanted to write a couple dancehall infused house tracks, maybe you will hear something along those lines in the future.MP: Pioneers like Kendrick Lamar are shifting the dynamic of hip-hop, drawing on its older roots in jazz, funk, soul and spoken word. Do you see artist like him playing a roll in your future productions?JJ: I love jazz inspired hip hop. I cite 9th Wonder, Pete Rock & C.L Smooth and Masta Ace as some of my favorite pioneers of that specific subsection of hip hop. More so east coast gangsta rap will play more into my productions in the future. Gotta rep my coast :)MP: We originally came across your work early last year through one of our family members Templeton. In the time since you started producing how do you feel that your music has evolved?JJ: I definitely feel that I've grown as a producer/artist. I’m focusing on putting out more originals. I'm collaborating with more people. My mix downs have are getting better. As I learn more about production, I’m finding it easier to express myself musically.MP: If you could hop into a studio with any hip-hop artist, past or present, to create an original with, who would it be?JJ: Mystikal. Mans was famous for screaming DANGER. His verse on 'Move Bitch' is iconic. 'What's Your Fantasy' era Ludacris is a close contender.MP: You've been given an entire stage at a major music festival to curate the lineup for a day/night. Who would you have perform and what would you call the stage?JJ: Julius Jetson Presents: This is Gangsta HouseMalaa33hzRafael CarvalhoBijouDoozieTempletonJuany Bravo
