LAMP Weekly Mix #108 feat. Birdee
LAMP Weekly Mix #108 feat. Birdee
We're back at this week after an amazing 3 Year Anniversary with our friends. As promised this year, we've got a whole new host of guest gracing our #weeklmix series. Birdee has been on our radar for quite some time. When he sent over some of his tunes last year especially those from the 'B-love' EP we knew we couldn't wait any longer and PZB - Josh Brooks got things in motion. Originally from Italy, Birdee found his way to California via a stint in London for several years consuming all the house culture he could. Since his arrival here in LA the already seasoned producer and DJ has continued created sunsoaked funky vibes and sharing his love for disco with the west coast. PZB & MR PUZL had the opportunity to chat with Birdee about his career, favorite remixes and more!MR PUZL: I had my first opportunity to watch you play last year during Fortune 421's Hollywood Pool Party, so we've been looking forward to having you on our Weekly Mix rotation. What have you got in store for this mix?Birdee: Thanks, it’s a pleasure to be on board! Well, there are quite a few new Birdee tracks on it actually, alongside music from some of my favorite artists like Louis La Roche, Lenno, Fred Falke... Disco is definitely the keyword here.PZB: We're particularly fond of your tune 'Cant' Fight The Feeling' along with some of your other originals of late. Do you feel like this style of disco-house is where your productions are headed?B: Glad you like it! I actually finished 'Can’t Fight The Feeling' last week, and was debating whether to put it on the mix or not... I tried to mix it in and it felt right, so I left it on there! Yes, I’ve always been a big fan of happy, bouncy disco, I like to see smiling faces on the dancefloor. I would say I produce happy, sunny music.PZB: Prior to your move to Los Angeles you were in London for a few years. Did your time there influence your current production style? What inevitably prompted your move to California?B: London has an incredible music scene, it’s definitely one of the leading cities in the world. The club circuit and the creativity surrounding dance music is seriously astounding. However, after a few years there I wanted a change…I had played in LA a few times and instantly fell in love with it, the laid-back vibe fits my sound, plus it’s sunny and warm all the time. There is a great scene here too, quite a lot of disco!MP: Growing up, what were some of your earliest memories of music? How did you find your way into producing and DJing?B: I actually played in bands for a long time, and wasn’t really a fan of house (which Italy is famous for) at all when I was growing up... I was into hard rock and metal. It was only when Big Beat exploded that I finally got it, I had my first short stay in London just when Fatboy Slim’s second album was released and the sound was everywhere, mixing disco, funk, rock, soul and everything else. I came back from the UK to Italy with a few vinyls I had bought, and a friend taught me how to mix... a few months later I went back to London for good, and got a job in a second hand record store where I built up my vinyl collection. I started producing around the same time too!MP: Although you now reside in Los Angeles are there certain elements of your Italian upbringing that permeate into your music?B: Oh yes, well Giorgio Moroder is from Ortisei which is less than an hour’s drive from my hometown. Disco has always been around us, and of course the Italo sound was big when I was growing up - although truth be told, a lot of it was mega cheesy. Also, when I started the Birdee project there seemed to be a new wave of exciting artists coming from Italy, His Majesty Andre, Phonat, Fire Flowerz, Speaker Bomb, and especially Reset! who acted like a catalyst for this whole scene - I did a collaboration with them on Southern Fried and they helped me push Birdee from the very start. I can never thank Rocco enough.MP: Your productions know no bounds when it comes to genres of electronic music. Even within your Birdee brand you've integrated quite a few styles. What about this particular project sets it apart from your previous endeavors?B: I think with Birdee the key is, it has to be funky and have that sunny vibe I was mentioning earlier. If I’m producing and it feels like that, it’s a Birdee track!MP: You've been able to remix some awesome tracks from across the spectrum of house music under the Birdee moniker. What do you look for in a remix project and is there something about a song that usually catches your ear?B: Yeah I’ve been very lucky and have managed to remix some great tracks. Usually a good hook makes remixing an easy job, I am particularly happy to have remixed my good friends Louis La Roche and J Paul Getto, I still play that one out!PZB: Touring is always an exciting part about a music career. Do you have any favorite cities or venues that you've played that you'd definitely go back to?B: Yes! Well, as long as the crowd is up for it - you can’t really have a bad time touring. But if I really have to pick, I’ve had some very special moments in London, Sydney and Milan. The Reset! parties in Milan are always off the hook, and I am very excited to be playing in London again in February for my Chase The Compass friends!
