LAMP Weekly Mix #161 feat. Ańii

This week we're excited to have fast rising producer Ańii gracing our mix series and she's surprised us with a slew of new unreleased material.A Polish transplant based in London Ańii has been carefully and strategically amassing a wealth of knowledge and honing her skills in the studio and behind the decks. For the better part of 6 years Ania Iwinska studied English in London as well as attending the world renowned Point Blank Music School. With a series of successful releases and remixes on prominent labels such as EIN2, Click Records, Selador, Making You Dance and Polymath the stage is set for Ańii to have a fruitful 2017. Our Monday Editor, Mike Grant, had a chance to pick her brain and talk about her roots as a DJ and producer.Mike Grant: Welcome to our weekly mix series, Ania! We really appreciate you taking the time. Can you tell us a little about the mix you put together?Ańii: The mix is kind of a darker side of me. It includes a lot of my unreleased tracks and stuff that I enjoy to listen to at the moment. It’s a bit of a journey mix. MG: Tell us a bit about your roots. How did you become interested DJing and production?Ańii: I always wanted to DJ and make music since I can remember. People used to laugh when I told them I hear music in my head even if nothing was playing around me. Then I moved to London and I went to music school but, unfortunately it took me many years first to learn English . So I had a bit of a break in my journey but now I do what I love the most and try to be as good as I can in it :)MG: Congratulations on your recent Polymath release! We are huge fans of Third Son’s work and everything he does with Polymath. I also checked out your remix for Darko Milosevic’s Toroidal Flow. That marks your second release for Making You Dance. Anything else exciting in the pipeline that you can talk about?Ańii: Thank you! And yes, plenty. I have an EP for Sincopat coming really soon and a release on Parquet Records, more remixes and just more and more. So 2017 looks really exciting.MG: London is a major hub for the global dance music scene with some of the most famous nightclubs and parties on the planet. But every city has its own unique flavor. What would you say it is about London that continues to draw you in as an artist?Ańii: Well, I come from a small town so London is just for me... wow. It's full of creativity, art and just people that make you inspired. There is no city like this as London never sleeps.MG: I see in your bio that you attended Point Blank Music College. One of our artists, Damon Steele, attended Point Blank’s Los Angeles campus. Can you tell us a bit about your experience there? Would you recommend music school to other aspiring artists?Ańii: Yes Point Blank was great. I never had education in English so at beginning it was hard for me, but being around people with the same interest and very talented teachers definitely helped me so much to start out and I would recommend this to anybody.MG: From ‘Desert God’ to ‘Soma’ you have shown a remarkable ability to create high quality music across a broad range of genres within the techno/house umbrella. Where do you draw all of this inspiration from?Ańii: Haha. Well I’m still finding my sound thats why is there is so much range and I don’t want to limit myself to just one thing, as I change, my music changes with me. Most of it is from life experience, as I attract trouble. My music can be very expressive.MG: Do you work out of a home studio or do you go to a pro studio space when you produce? What are some go to pieces of equipment in your set up?Ańii: At the moment I actually do both as I’m building my home studio and I work at Wired Studios as a assistant engineer. My home collection is building really quick. I use a lot of Moog Sub 37 for my basslines and I purchased a Prophet 0b-6 as well as vintage Novation Supernova, mother 37 and the list grows...MG: Everybody has a different creative process. Mine involves hours, sometimes days, of procrastination. What do you like to do when you’re procrastinating?Ańii: I live alone and I don’t own a TV so I don’t get easy distracted. I like to work hard but, if it happens, then I do yoga and meditate, specially in the morning to put my mind straight.
