LAMP Weekly Mix #117 feat. Kristin Velvet

This week we are beyond excited to present our latest guest mix from Kristin Velvet the talented and hardworking boss of one of our favorite house labels Arms & Legs."I first came across Kristin Velvet last year diving through one of my favorite labels Arms & Legs listening to one of my favorite producers Daniel Steinberg. The track that followed was a collab EP by her and Harry Axt called Action/Reaction. I bought it immediately and then realized I had one of her earlier EPs already in my Rekordbox. Fate has it that today I was able to share one of my favorite female producers on our LAMP Guest series." - MR PUZLMR PUZL: It's a real pleasure to have you as our guest this week. What have you got in store for our listeners in your mix?Kristin Velvet: The pleasure is all mine, thanks for having me! This mix pretty accurately reflects how I play, some new some old and heavily featuring our Arms & Legs label output.MP: That Magnolia sample in that Phats & Small track is hilarious, a real classic! I believe it is a vinyl promo-only press, correct? Do you still go crate digging or is most of your music consumption done online these days?KV: The vocal is ridiculous! I love that it’s so earnest, too funny. Actually I found this one as a bonus track on a maxi single CD so no it’s not vinyl only, but nevertheless hard to find. I do both; crate digging & online, it’s the combination that keeps it interesting.MP: How did you first get involved in Arms & Legs? Am I correct in saying that you help run the imprint? And if so, in what capacity?KV: I met Daniel Steinberg about 5 years ago when he was touring in Australia, we kept in touch and I sent him some demos, the rest is history! Daniel & Nils Ohrmann have created something really special and authentic with Arms & Legs it’s a real pleasure to work with them both. There are no set roles, we all just chip in and help each other out however we can. It’s a very special little family.MP: You've worked with several other artists on the label and most of your discography lies within the Arms & Legs family. Was this by design? What other artists and labels are you following these days?KV: In fact all of my discography lies within Arms & Legs, I’ve never sent my music anywhere else! It’s a great platform and fun & supportive home.I’m a big fan of the classic house & techno labels like Peacefrog, Trax Records, Dance Mania, Naked music & DNH Records to name a few. More recently Dekmantel have some quality releases. We’re very spoilt with great DJs here in Berlin, one of my favourites is Gratts; he’s an amazingly eclectic selector who never fails to surprise!MP: Having travelled and lived in so many different places do you feel connected to one place more strongly than any other? Do you miss anything about Australia that you wish you could have in Berlin?KV: My strongest connection is where I was raised and where my family still live, in the Australian outback. I grew up on a big, very isolated cattle farm, and although it’s one of the most beautiful places on earth it’s simply not an option for me to live there. I try not to focus too much on missing things but rather on making the best of my current situation wherever that may be in the world. Every place has something to offer.MP: In an article on Knights of the Turntable you mentioned that, "In Berlin you don’t have the same financial pressures of survival that you face in London, Sydney or Tokyo which gives people a freedom to create. It’s a very unique place." Can you elaborate on that? How does Berlin compare to other German cities you've visited?KV: Berlin is special. You just have to come here and experience it; it’s unlike any other city I’ve ever lived in.MP: I'm still playing your tune 'Action' on the regular. What have you got in store for releases this year?KV: Thank you that’s really great to hear! I’ve got a bunch of new productions on the brink of completion that I can’t wait to release; you’ll definitely be hearing a new EP from me in the summer.MP: Finally, when are we going to get you and the A&L crew to come to LA!? I know Vonda7 would love to join the lineup ;)KV: Name the date! We’d love to come to LA!
