LAMP Weekly Mix #153 feat. Cabrillo

This week we invited our own family member to grace our weekly mix series. From the moment we heard his 'Beat Vibrated' EP we knew that there was something special about this producer. We also quickly found out he's super solid on the decks when he opened up for our last event with CLAAP & Santana. With multiple releases and remixes coming out in steady fashion there's plenty of Cabrillo to go around.MR PUZL: While we here at LAMP are no strangers to you and your music we thought it might be good for you to introduce yourself to our audience properly.Cabrillo: Of course! Well, I'm a house dj/producer currently based in LA, but born and raised in Santa Barbara. I've been essentially obsessed with the art of DJing since a young age and that's driven me to this point in my career. I'm happy to say that I've had the opportunity to work with and open for a bunch of great producers over the years and feel that I've only scratched the surface. Being a part of the LAMP family definitely validates all my hard work and brings me around some of the most genuine people in the scene. Really happy to be here and doing this mix for you guys.MP: There some great tracks woven into your mix. Tell us a bit about them and what you were going for.C: A few of the tracks are my own while others are songs that i've really been inspired by and fit what I would play during a typical Cabrillo set. When I'm listening to new songs, I'm envisioning what they would sound like in an underground setting where everyone is vibing and singing along to the soulful lyrics whenever they pop up. Mixing the soul with raw dirty sounds is what I'm all about. So from this set, I'd say the tracks by South Royston, Drop 2 Jump, Greco, Fraser Whalen, and Mikki Funk.MP: You’re a California native, specifically from Santa Barbara. What was the music scene like for you growing up there? How did you first get involved in electronic music and producing?C: Well the Electronic music scene in Santa Barbara was virtually non-existant growing up, however the party scene in general has always been a big part of the city. I had young parents, so they often played music that you would hear out at clubs like the 90s hip hop, R&B, and a little old school latin house sprinkled in. I first got into DJing when I was 12 years old, got my first real decks as I entered college, and started producing late during my college years. I thought it was the logical next step and I wanted to feel that rush of people really dancing and feeling tunes that I created myself.MP: Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo was a Spanish navigator and one of the first explorers to navigate the modern-day California coast. Is that by chance where your name stems from?C: That's actually EXACTLY where my name stems from! Not only that, but one of the main streets in Santa Barbara is Cabrillo Blvd - which I grew up right next to. I'm a huge history fan, love where I come from, and wanted to have a name that complimented my pride, culture, and spoke to forging new paths within dance music.MP: There are moments during a set where it starts click and vibe with the audience. There’s that feeling where you know you have an opportunity to play one of your favorite songs. What are some of your go-to tracks?C: Oh man, isn't that the best feeling! I'd say my go-to tracks right now are "Coz I'm Ready" by Skapes & Golf Clap, Greco's 'Dub in this Life', and Mikki Funk's 'Night Flyer' to end the set on a sexy note (which I do in this mix).MP: Crate digging is such an rewarding experience and if you’re patient and look in some unlikely places you’ll find some real gems. What are some labels and artists that have got you buzzing right now? Any music that’s off the ‘mainstream’ radar that we should be checking out?C: Definitely - I spend a lot of time digging through Soundcloud, Facebook groups, and podcasts but I tend to always come back to a few sources. Spira Music and Rawsome has been buzzing with a ton of raw house tracks. Country Club Disco, Nite Records, House N' House, and Madtech are some of my favorites too. All the artists on there are crazy talented.MP: Living in LA there’s an abundance of talent and everywhere you turn clubs, bars and warehouses are presenting some great lineups. If you were given a blank check and a night to curate your favorite acts who would you book?C: That's a pretty easy one for me - Top 4: Low Steppa, MK, Sonny Fodera, and Golf Clap.MP: Solid win against the Bills this weekend! Odds the Raiders take home a ring this year?C: Ha! I'm glad you noticed I'm such a big Raider fan. As long as we have Khalil Mack and Derek Carr on our side, anything is possible! #RaiderNationMP: Any shout outs you want to give?C: First and foremost all my friends and family for their support from the beginning of this journey. Then I'd definitely have to shout out to my boy Cam for helping me get my tunes out there, all the producers who I've bounced ideas off of, and of course you homies at LAMP. Seriously couldn't be more thankful to be a part of such a dope family of people who want to spread the love of house and care about the music so much. You guys are the best.
