Track of the Day: Tony Tokyo - Zeph
This past week I took a dive into a relatively new platform called SubmitHub, created by Indie Shuffle Founder Jason Grishkoff. Due to the enormous amount of email submissions that they receive on a daily basis the platform strives to not only alleviate backlog but also to open up the opportunity for artists, blogs and media outlets to be apart of their community. We signed LAMP up purely out of curiosity and have enjoyed the experience so far. So much so, that I came across today's Track of the Day 'Zeph' from London based artists Tony Tokyo.
Tony Tokyo - Zeph
There a several elements of this track that I enjoy, but what hooked me at the outset was the wonderful piano melody that opens up the song. It's really well layered and sits nicely over top of an accompanying string synth pad that softly pulsates and lifts the each stroke of the keys upwards. A heavily delayed popping stab joins the foray to add nice character to the upper registers. A simple clap, panning hi-hat and other delicate percussive hits group together nicely fulfilling my love for a long well worked introduction. The transition was the second element of this composition that sealed the deal. Tokyo pulls out practically all residual sound before dropping us into this growling grainy bass line. The effects of the synthesis can really be heard when the initial note is played with fermata allowing for a quick pause on the percussive beat before they all fall neatly back into the core rhythm. The reintroduction of the lead synth tells demonstrates that each instrument has been given proper attention in the overall arrangement and provides a complete picture of Tokyo's artistic vision for the style and sound of 'Zeph'.I've only begun to scratch the surface on Tony Tokyo but this British producer certainly has a diverse collection of productions in his repertoire ranging from a future bass tip on his Ace of Base remix to his more house infused retwist of Amy Winehouse's 'Stronger Than Me'. Comfortable in his affinity for anime, sparkling water and a cruising altitude of 123 BPMs, Tokyo's work has not gone unnoticed with an appearance on BBC's Radio 1 show for Toddla T, a debut EP on Roska Kicks and Snares, and a release Audio Rehab London in just a few short years. We're definitely keen to hear more from this producer in the near future.Check out more from Tony Tokyo below:If you haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, be sure to check out our latest Guest Mix by GAL:Enjoy,MR PUZL
