Track of the Day: Policy - Shuanglian
Policy - Shuanglian
'Shuanglian' is one stop along Policy's latest journey as he unleashes a swath of vibrant soundscapes providing the perfect soundtrack for those long road trips. The track is part of Policy's recent release 'The Republic', which presents us with an introspective look into the artist's past; a sort of childhood biopic rendered as a 50 minute composition. An array of distorted organ chords dance playfully with abstract, synthesized notes and a driving percussion line that portrays an exhilarating sense of movement. Clever drops of modern funk bass lines and electric guitar licks are revealed at certain moments to break up the song nicely. Softly placed arrangements reminiscent of a recorded xylophone pear through the layers to add a nice dry timbre to the high end and develop a great harmony with the quirky and eerie synths that creep in around the 1:03.Manhattan 'filmmaker-turned-beatbroker' Francis Hsueh, aka Policy, chose to return to his childhood hometown in Taipei to build the foundation for this album. It can be assumed that his previous career has seeped into his process for creating his sounds as he immerses himself into his surroundings with calculated purpose. Each listed 'track' from this recording is named after a particular station along Taipei's subway line further revealing a larger scope to the artist's project. As a film maker Hsueh along with production partner Steven Hahn produced a series of films during the early part of the new millennium garnering attention especially for their work on 'Pretty to Think So' which received several independent film awards. Policy's passion for music has been with him since he could practically walk. However, his passion for the electronic elements came about when he was scoring music for a few of his films, specifically he mentions trying to use an Aphex Twin track in one of them but couldn't accurately sync it so he attempted to make his own edit. His strong relationship with 100% Silk is apparent and an appropriate match given the labels old school approach to releasing with a definite artistic DIY sensibility. Admittedly a late bloomer in the scene, that has not deterred Policy from carving out his own sound and providing a refreshing take on underground house movement... hopefully inspiring others to follow suit.Check out more from 100% Silk along with a few other choice tracks from Policy below:Don't forget to check out our latest Guest Mix courtesy of Sage Caswell:Enjoy,MR PUZL
