Track of the Day: Lee Gamble - B23 Steelhouse
Had a long day today but when I got home I had a package waiting for me on my doorstep. Inside was this white label press of Lee Gamble's 'B23 Steelhouse' which also included extended mix of 'Motor System' off last year's epic album KOCH. This guy is on the cutting edge of electronic synthesis and experimentation and it was a trip and a half to go down this wonderful rabbit hole of music.
Lee Gamble - B23 Steelhouse
From notes regarding my purchase I was informed that, "'B23 Steelhouse' is a rework of 'Steelhouse Chaconne', itself an unreleased Lee Gamble dub from 2013." The track opens up with a fast paced array of drum loops and panning percussion stabs that are joined by a raw 909 clap that rattles cleverly between the hi-hats. A deep, staccato bassline rides underneath the prevailing atmosphere of punishing beats. Between hi frequency drones and pitch-bending crashes Lee Gamble puts a melting pot of modulation into a blender and reassembles it piece by piece creating a metamorphosis of exotic auditory landscapes.Gamble is a scientist, with the precision of a surgeon when crafting his work. An undeniable and unwavering work ethic and attention to detail seem present on every track he releases. From crackling tape hisses, to off beat stabs this artist paints cleverly formed abstract works that hypnotize the senses. Unashamed and unafraid Gamble is willing to delve deep into a vortex of textures and soundscapes that seem, at times, otherworldly yet eerily comforting. His works reside between legendary techno label PAN and his own newly formed imprint UIQ. Although he is a UK native, Lee Gamble's sounds lend themselves perfectly to the Berlin melting pot of techno and experimental electronica. His 2014 interview with Red Bull Music Academy reveals his affection for computer programming and digital synthesis that is referred to as dehumanized sound. A true student of electronic music at its core, Gamble has approached his methods much like a professor exploring a hypothesis. Rather than following formulaic patterns in current music trends Gamble has chosen to take the path less trodden and in turn pioneers new synthesizing methods while literally pushing technology to a breaking point, "I would crash pieces of software and record the output of the crashes."Check out some of the tracks from KOCH below.
