Track of the Day: Higher Ground feat. Modus by Shark Faicol
Higher Power feat. Modus - Shark Faicol
Higher Power feat. Modus by Shark Faicol seamlessly infuses both producers styles into a smooth, free flowing tech house track.
Both of these accomplished producers have been making their mark here in LA for quite some time and have known each other since they were kids. It's amazing to see their progress and even more exciting that they are now collaborating together on music as well as sharing a studio/living space. The track starts off with a clean drum loop layered neatly with soft percussion stabs and a floating synth rhythm. The track is broken up by some echoing vocal samples with a touch of reverb that falls back into pace of the drum pattern. Simplicity is the key here, and by no means is that a negative, but rather a methodic approach to the composition of this tech house staple. We also got the chance to sit down with the two producers and ask them about the track and upcoming projects.LAMP: What was the basis for Higher Power? Did the track come together before or after you guys moved in together?Modus: Higher Power is a track we worked on together once we moved into our new place in Los Angeles about a month ago. I had already made the drum loop but the track was missing something. Mark used the Moog Little Phatty to add some funk to the bass line, put his touch on the the high hats, as well as added some keys. We arranged the track together and added the "higher power" talking loop you hear in the break down.Shark Faicol: Yep. As most of you probably know, moving isn’t fun, so this track was really born out of us needing to take a break from moving tables, chairs and couches to our new place. Sometimes songs just come together quickly and naturally; this was one of them and the entire process was fun which is what it should be all about.LAMP: What are your goals for the rest of this year?Modus: To keep making music and put more originals out. November is going to be a big month for me in the studio.Shark Faicol: Finish my EP. Compete in an eating contest. Travel to space.LAMP: How do you feel the underground scene has developed over the past year? Is techno/ tech house making its resurgence?Modus: It keeps spreading and spreading. Techno / Tech House is definitely making its resurgence. Especially now that 'deep house' has become a somewhat common and overplayed sound/style, people are starting to explore more music and go even darker (mainly talking about the US market here). I see the scene in New York where Techno is booming and that drives me to help push the scene forward here.Shark Faicol: The underground scene isn’t anything new and I feel I owe a lot of the music I’ve grown to love to that space. I traveled to Chicago this past Summer and was astounded by how strong the scene was (which has been going on for decades). We even have some really great events and promoters here in LA too if you look in the right places. A lot of times I’ve found that this is where I’ve discovered some of the best music and DJs that I maybe wouldn’t have known about otherwise.LAMP: If you had $100 what would you buy at 7-Eleven?Modus: Studio Beers and Cigs, Beef Jerky, Coconut Water, lighters, pistachios/nuts, sour punch, sour gummy worms, and the rest on some scratchers.Shark Faicol: Slurpees, a big bite hot dog, ice cream, Doritos, Sun Chips, Powdered Donuts, sunglasses, Fiji, gum…… and yeah, Modus and I would probably pool the remaining money and buy scratchers and lotto tickets. Also be sure to check out Modus' new radio show "Operandi":Enjoy,MR PUZL
