Track of the Day: Dennis Quin - Spread Love
Tis' the season when producers start giving out tracks to close out the year, and 2015 is no exception to quality. Late last week I stumbled across a new Soundcloud Channel called House N House and noticed they were reposting loads of great tracks especially from Low Steppa. Then yesterday a few tracks were uploaded to the channel all from artists related to the Simma Black family including the man himself. My hunch was confirmed today when I spoke to someone helping out with the the channel that indeed Low Steppa was behind this new project. Today's Track of the Day features Dutch producer and DJ Dennis Quin delivering a super bass laden house tune called 'Spread Love'.
Dennis Quin - Spread Love
From the outset this tune is jammed packed with serious energy. Big punching kicks drive forward as tightly cropped snares and 808 claps fold into the percussive package. A low rumbling bass pad works its way to the foreground as a super quick vox loop rises in to help with the transition out of the intro. There's something to be said for layering kicks and blending them with a well crafted bass line. Many times producers will skint on properly EQing their drums and bass notes resulting in a muddied output in the low frequencies. Quin adds teeth to his bass by pushing his cutoff, attack and resonance up and utilizing some important automation in the envelopes to work in variation and timely transitional elements. My absolute favorite bit about this tune is the vocal sample. As I mentioned before Quin uses some awesome looping effects to subtly introduce the vox, and it shapes the first introduction to full sample nicely and really comes into play during the tunes main breakdown. The sample is from Earth, Wind & Fire's 'Spread Your Love' and is such an interesting choice for this style of track but he really makes it work!

What's exciting about Dennis Quin is that he's only been truly producing for the last 3 years and exclusively (until now) with Hardsoul. The Dutch house masters clearly heard something special from Quin early on and saw his raw potential match with an undeniable skill behind the decks (especially with Vinyl). Quin got his start in the scene around 1993 when he started collecting his first records and from there he developed a deep understanding of house as it evolved while still maintaining some of those 'classic' qualities that purists have come to endear. With a firm grasp on that sound you can also hear his adventurous ear exploring more other heavier sounds ranging from deep garage to UK Bass in more recent releases including his EP on Simma Black 'Wicked Love'.
