Track of the Day: Audiojack - No Rest For The Wicked (H.O.S.H remix)

A couple of weeks ago Gruuv released a compilation of remasters from the label’s extensive back catalog of hits. The purpose of the project is to celebrate all of the hard work that mastering engineers put into their craft. Specifically, Steffen Muller, Gruuv’s mastering engineer of choice. Audiojack, the label boss of Gruuv, refers to mastering engineers as the “unsung heroes” of music production. For those of us who don’t know exactly what a mastering engineer does, they are the guys in the trenches who fine tune the levels of a track to make each sound pop. A good master makes all the difference when listening on a big sound system. This compilation highlights that difference brilliantly. Listen to the original releases of a few of these tracks and compare them to the remasters. The remasters are so much cleaner, tighter, and brighter. My favorite track on the compilation is ‘Audiojack – No Rest For The Wicked (H.O.S.H. Remix)’. I love big tracks and this one maintains an aura of size throughout. It opens with a simple two chord disco inspired piano rhythm backed by a droning bassline that feels fun and upbeat. It then quickly segues into the breakdown, the pièce de résistance of the track, in the form of a beautiful, somber piano composition. It is interesting to note these two distinct tones: the brightness of the intro compared to the subdued breakdown. The effectiveness with which Audiojack and H.O.S.H. are able to draw out such contrasting emotions within the confines of a single track serves to highlight their skill as producers.Audiojack is a Leeds-based DJ and production duo comprised of James Rial and Richard Burkinshaw. The two met in Ibiza over 10 years ago and since then they have been ripping dancefloors to shreds around the world. In 2010 they started Gruuv, a house and techno label that is known for consistently releasing high quality tracks. Gruuv has releases from many of house music’s biggest acts including Oxia, Andhim, Rodriguez Jr., Luna City Express, &me, Lee Van Dowski, and many, many more. Head over to Gruuv on SoundCloud and check out their channel for moreIf you haven't had a chance yet make sure to head over to LAMP as well and check out Shuhandz latest guest mix for us. Perfect to get your weekend started right.
