LAMP Weekly Mix #82 feat. DWYR

This week we welcome a new face to the Guest Mix series, DWYR! Currently residing and enjoying life in Madrid, he is on his first trip back to the states for a series of LA shows that includes his debut at SPACE YACHT tonight as part of our LAMP Takeover! DWYR is making heads move with some recent releases including a summer soaked vibes of 'Make Me Float'.MR PUZL got the opportunity to catch up with DWYR in between his packed schedule of shows to talk a little bit about his residency at the much talked about Goya Social Club (Madrid) and his outlook for future releases.MR PUZL: Tell us a little bit about your mix and the tracks you chose.DWYR: My idea with this mix was to combine some of my favorite tracks that I would play throughout different points of the night. There are some tracks I would play for opening sets, peak hour and closing. The mix wouldn’t necessarily be something I play in this order but I wanted to kind of demonstrate a lot of the tracks and styles that I enjoy playing out right now.MP: You're originally from Phoenix, AZ. What first brought you to Madrid? How long have you been living there?DWYR: Well Spain is amazing and when an opportunity to live there arose I had to take it. I guess it was just a point in my life where that kind of move seemed feasible and originally I had no intention of staying but I just got sucked in and now it’s weird to think of anywhere else as home. I have been there just about 4 years now….Time flies! MP: Do you see yourself returning to the US at some point?DWYR: Being in LA has definitely been very eye opening and easy to see why it’s such a hub for artists and creatives, but I think being able to come back and visit while living in Europe makes for an interesting dynamic. I could see myself fitting in really well here I just don’t think I am ready to make that decision yet. MP: You've got an exciting lineup of events here in California. Will you be touring anywhere else before you return to Spain?DWYR: No, I actually really wanted to just focus on LA for my little US debut and try to get inspired to go back and work on more music. Playing shows is definitely important, but I think at this point working on more tunes is the best thing I could be doing right now to grow and help make these trips more frequent.MP: Between your first original release 'All Night' and your latest 'Make Me Float' we see a diverse range of sounds coming from your productions. What kind of vibe will we be expecting to hear from your forthcoming EP?DWYR: Yeah there are some huge differences in my tracks right now and that is something I would like to hone in on and create an EP with a little more continuity. I definitely feel a few darker club tracks are on the way but I always really love writing melodic vocal tracks as well. It’s going to be my biggest effort yet though.MP: Goya Social Club is intimate space that curates some exciting acts. How has your residency there helped you develop your craft? Does what you hear from others who perform there permeate into your own style and song writing?DWYR: The club has been a wonderful tool to really understand how crowds respond and what kind of mistakes you can easily avoid when playing your set. I feel very fortunate to have such a nice spot to play consistently and work out all the little kinks. Having all these great producers/DJs that I look up to and admire come play at Goya has definitely been the most rewarding part of having this spot. For the most part we keep in touch and I usually try to get some feedback when I can. Everyone has been exceptionally friendly.MP: You've mentioned in the past that your main instrument is the drums and that you'd like to get into a studio to do some live recording. Has that opportunity presented itself to you? Have you worked with other musicians in a live recording session?DWYR: It’s a challenge for me to find a setup with live elements in Madrid at the moment, though it’s something I’d love to put together in the future. Before I started in the DJ world I worked with live artists all the time, recording and mixing their records. I always loved sitting in the producer chair and playing so it’s absolutely something I am working towards in the near future.MP: What local musicians and producers are you really into at the moment? Who would you love to get into a studio and collaborate on a song with?DWYR: There are probably a ton of DJs that I play and like but don’t even realize are from LA, ha! I am really excited to play with Templeton at the party, I think his music is really solid and I usually play his stuff out quite a bit. I also spoke with my good buddy Colour Vision about working on a track together so that would be great if we pull it off. I really would love to see Justin Jay’s studio setup too--I think he always produces really creative sleek tracks.MP: If you could curate a lineup here in LA of your favorite DJs who would they be?DWYR: Oh man this is tough. So many great artists out there right now! I’d want to bring out people like Jonas Rathsman, Duke Dumont, Dirty Bird crew, as many of my DJ friends that can fit on one stage, Eton Messy dudes and then a Co-Headlining act of Kendrick Lamar with Flying Lotus. That would be epic.MP: If you had advice to friends visiting Madrid for 1 day & night, what would your itinerary look like for them?DWYR: I would basically just list all the best places to get drunk and eat as much amazing Spanish food as possible. Hopefully it’s a weekend so we could make it to Goya and party til 6 or 7am. I feel like now I have a good idea of where some of the best spots are in the city so we would skip all the touristy things and go straight for the great local stuff.
