LAMP Mix #326 feat. Rybo

Whats up LAMP Fam!! We have a Halloween treat for you today. We are excited to have our friend Rybo bringing you a fresh new mix as he prepares to take over the decks this Friday at the annual Minimal Effort Halloween extravaganza. We have been huge fans of this incredible producer/ label owner/ DJ since the day we met him. He is one of the most genuine and likeable people we have ever come across and his love for music is infectious. We first met him a while back down on a little reservation called Los Coyotes with the Desert Hearts Family (much love to that crew) and since then he has really made a name for himself. Standing apart with his own crew and rising on an astronomical trajectory, Percomaniacs has really got people taking notice. This summer has been evidence of that with an endless number of gigs at festivals across the country and many more events coming up. If you are just discovering Rybo through us you are in for a treat and we highly recommend you dive into his socials and get to know more about him. If you are in Los Angeles this weekend then do yourself a huge favor and get over to Minimal Effort where he will be performing in addition to a slew of other great talents. We also go to ask Rybo a few questions and encourage you to check that out down below. Cheers!!

Josh Brooks: Hello Rybo and thank you for putting together such a great mix for us. Can you give us some insight into where you drew inspiration for this mix along with a couple of your favorite tracks you included?

Rybo: Thanks for having me Josh! I wanted to start the mix off with some more listenable tracks then work my way into some tracks you’ll hear on the dance floor. I’ve been really digging the final track in the mix which is a mash up of Drop the Pressure and Doctor Beat called Doctor Pressure. It just has that perfect balance of rave-y meets disco.

Josh Brooks: It has been a great summer and so good to be getting back to shows. I am particularly excited for Minimal Effort coming up at the end of this month which you will performing at. How has your summer been in terms of gigs and are there any that stand out in particular?

Rybo: it felt really good to be back on the road after lock down. It honestly felt a little wired at first so I kind of had to ease back into it. I really enjoyed playing Beyond Wonderland this summer, it was crazy to play a festival on that scale after over a year of nothing.

Josh Brooks: Tell us about your journey into music and the clubs, labels, DJs and experiences that made you into the artist you are?

Rybo: It all started as a hobby that turned into a passion when I was 18. I was lucky enough to get a few gigs at the Avalon in Hollywood then moving to LA a few years later. I think some of my best experiences are living here and being able to immerse myself in the dance music culture.

Josh Brooks: Along with past LAMP guest mix contributor Lubelski and hopefully Future LAMP Guest Mix contributor Wyatt Marshall you three have created a great new label in Percomaniacs. Tell us a little bit about the genesis of that label and the trajectory you envision over the next year or so.

Rybo: We just want to put out music that we truly love whether it be a more listenable track or one more aimed for the dance floor. We’re also doing percomaniacs showcases on the road with other artists that have released on the label, so we’ll definitely be continuing that.

Josh Brooks: Could you describe your creative process on the basis of a piece or album that's particularly dear to you, please? Where did the ideas come from, how were they transformed in your mind, what did you start with and how do you refine these beginnings into the finished work of art?

Rybo: Most of my ideas come from jamming out in the studio. I usually have somewhat of an idea in my head but it can definitely take a turn but not for the worst haha. One of my favorite tracks I’ve made was with Lubelski and Sohmi called Somebody like You. I was borrowing an ARP 2600 and came up with this cool bass line that’s the main melody in the track. I was kinda stuck on it but knew it had potential so I took it over to Lubelski and we finished it out but it was still missing something. We ended up taking it to Sohmi where she came up with some awesome lyrics and sang on it.

Josh Brooks: Thank you so much for your time and once again for contributing to our LAMP Mix series. I am really excited we were able to finally get you in here for one. As I mentioned before we are super excited for your performance at Minimal Effort at the end of the month. If there is anything else we should be on the lookout for please let us know and keep us in the loop on future projects and events you are playing here in LA."
