While Josh and Alex are stuck up in Tahoe due to the snows (poor guys…) I’m holding down the fort here in Los Angeles with some airy vibes from the French duo Amentia. Today we have ‘Anémone’ from Raphaël and Etienne’s ‘L'ivresse Des Profondeurs’, out last year via Cepage Music. ‘Anémone’ is a beautiful track wrought with nostalgia and hypnotic melodies. The bright major scales in the breakdown make me feel like I am floating around in a bubble surrounded by mermaids. Simply stunning. Raphaël (keyboard) and Etienne (percussion) are classically trained jazz musicians who have worked tirelessly to translate their acoustic roots into the electronica realm. They have done a remarkable job. Interestingly, while Raphaël primarily works with digital synths the majority of Etienne’s percussion is recorded with microphones rather than produced on drum machines. Amentia have only been active since 2014 but have already made quite the splash. The Frenchmen have been pegged for releases by labels like Amselcom, Crossfrontier Audio, and Traum Schallplatten while their track ‘Serpent’ was recently included in Patrick Topping and Nathan Barato’s Paradise On Earth compilation for Hot Creations just last December. Next up for Raphaël and Etienne is the release of ‘Prince Des Marais EP’ via Chapter 24 Records on 2/24/17 and it is spectacular!
